Colonoscopy without any Sedation. Your thoughts please.

Cabs and Uber/Lyft are right out according to the colonoscopy clinic here. And they insist that somebody take you home who can sit with you until you are "right" again. They make it sound like some have taken off wandering in the road or trying to drive afterward.
Well that's a fine thing. I was once scheduled for a biopsy to see if I had cancer and the surgeon had already given me a big lecture about not taking it seriously enough because it had taken me a few weeks to find someone who would drive me to his office. Then the hospital said they couldn't schedule the operation until I had someone to drive me home -- just like they've told you, but that was forty years ago and I thought things would have improved by now.

I guess those of us with no friends or all our friends and family living in another state just don't get to have medical care.

What I ended up doing was say I had a ride and then go, "oops he couldn't make it," after the operation and I called a cab. The taxi driver was so nice to me I still remember it.

This seems like a decent small business for a retired person to run. Probably get a surety bond, insurance, and a background check to get licensed, and drive people to/from colonoscopy and similar procedures. Sounds like an easy job for a responsible person with reliable transportation.

Sure they'd need to charge for their time because you'll "have them" for a whole day... but at least it'd be an option.

I have not had a colonoscopy -but I have had that twilight sedation for a bone marrow biopsy

No pain and just needed to have somebody drive me home afterward and stay with a responsible adult for 24 hours.

In Australia people aged between 45 and 75 do a 2 yearly occult blood screening test - which you do at home, samples get sent to the lab and and then if they are positive, you go for colonoscopy.

If this is so, please do the colonoscopy - water enemas or whatever at home will not pick up pre cancerous or cancerous growths and early treatment of such makes huge difference in outcomes.

Firstly I would ignore @John cycling .
I had my first colonoscopy in the 80's, I was fully conscious but was given a pain killer, pethidine I think. I was diagnosed with haemorrhoids on the spot and asked the doctor about the cause, without hesitation he said that as a farmer I ate too much meat. The procedure was unpleasant but once I was fully medicated it was bearable. I could feel the progress of the optical device as it moved up my colon, TMI for some, but OP did ask. Prior to the first colonoscopy I had a Berium enema.
I had a radical haemorrhoidictomy in the 90's which was successful. I've had 3 more colonoscopies since then. My last colonoscopy was all clear 😁 but the preceding one had polyps removed at time.
OP talk to your providers about your options and good luck with your death defying act. 😜

My comments are only intended for those who wish to be healthy and who are willing to do what it takes.
Your comments are for the whacked and any sensible person would read them and lol, then make the appointment that could save their life.

Anyway as to the OP get the propofol as the sedative. It's the best hour of sleep you'll ever experience and you'll be looking forward to the next one as soon as you wake up!

Thanks to 'each' of you for your posts, thoughts, opinions, all worth
it stuff to read and think on. I am still pondering on my final decision
... sedation or no sedation for the end of this month's procedure.
I have had TWO with sedation over the last 20 years, but never one
of course, without sedations. I want this to be my very last Colonoscopy
if nothing of significance shows via the procedure.

I also do the At-Home Screening Test for Colon Cancer and related
things which showed negative last months results.

Any particular reason why? I personally wouldn't have a Colonoscopy without Sedation. One of my former coworkers had a Colonoscopy with sedation, but it wasn't enough and she was in a lot of distress.
@ Nathan, my main reason is securing a driver both to and from, last two times
I scheduled the past year, unfortunately my chosen driver, had to cancel at the
last minutes, and left me in a position of having to reschedule, and that was
very inconvenient. SO, my thoughts for this upcoming one in a few weeks is
I just might try it without SEDATION, will I regret doing so, don't know, not
decided yet of course.

So, one time having my driver cancel was the reason, the other time the procedure
was rescheduled with a two hr time frame moved out, and my driver could not then
be available.

A colonoscopy is a dangerous barbaric and totally unnecessary procedure.
Having some quack pump poisons into your digestive tract is a seriously bad idea.

If you're concerned with your colon then get an enema bag and do a pure water enema once a day
for at least 10 days or 2 weeks, until you're satisfied that your colon is cleaned out. Improve your diet.
Eat a healthy low fat diet with food that isn't highly processed and/or contaminated with unnatural additives.

Wrong information? Seriously? I have a healthy colon and don't have any polyps.
Attempting, and failing, to properly treat the symptoms does not get rid of the cause.
Making the colon more toxic and killing the remains of any beneficial bacteria makes it worse.

The only viable solution is to remove the toxic bacteria and chemicals that already exist in the colon,
and to nurture and cultivate the beneficial bacteria so they can flourish and help the colon become healthy.
Since you've had 3 colonoscopies already and are planning another one, they are obviously not working for you.

@Timewise 60+ -
You would only have abnormal growths and/or cancer due to having an unhealthy toxic colon.

I made a previous post <-- about this subject here a few years ago.
How many MD's do we have on the forum?

How many MD's do we have on the forum?
NONE, I don't think, but would be great if we did.

This is my last time around the track I hope for Colonoscopies
but if there have to be more deemed necessary by my specialists
then I will go ahead with them in the future, not with a smile on
my face lol, but I will do what has to be done.

My sister did one without and said it was very painful. I have had two and even though they tell you not to be alone for 24 hours I just ignored that. I go home and eat and then take a long nap. Maybe you could pay someone to drive you both ways.

Yep, I may end up doing that. I did that last two times but this recent year
when my Colonoscopy was scheduled my assigned driver has something
come up and could not transport me. Yet, I may do this again, I was just
wanting and hoping I could do the procedure without sedation, so much
for wanting and hoping I think ☺️

I have never had sedation for a colonoscopy, but
I did get, what they call gas, you just breathe in
through an open funnel like thing, this is connected
to the gas and you get a little with the air, this masks
any discomfort and you can drive your car home.

Mike.

Don't do it.

I have several friends who regretted not taking the sedation. If I had to have one, I would take anything that helped me get through it.
You can get a sigmoidoscopy in the doctor’s office without going through all the enemas and flushing out the colon. There is some pain as they shove the tube into you, but you would b awake for the whole thing. Not a fun thing.

Just have a nurse call a cab for you. Really you do not want a colonoscopy with no sedation!
