Colour hair or gracefully grey?

I used to color it, but stopped a little over 3 years ago when my boyfriend at the time (now husband) encouraged me to go grey. He is much younger and is attracted to older woman, so I did it to please him and it's been just fine for me. I constantly style it and have grown it longer than before I got into the relationship. We compliment each other well.
 
I'd never dye my hair. My mom did that in the early 1960s when she wanted to be a platimun blonde for some reason. Then she had to always be touching it up as it grew out. Seemed like a lot of trouble. She finally gave up that fashion trend and let her golden brown grow back in.
 

Well not that you care... but it doesn't matter to me as long as it doesn't look funny. I was going to say "look unnatural" but that's not fair because some does but still looks great.
 
I got more grey in the last 3 years. But I am still predominantly a dark brunette with a cool grey streak in the front that I consider my highlights.
 
My hair is brown but going grey now, especially at the temples. But I'm proud of my hairstyle, which is rapidly becoming what I call "The Costanza."
 
I am going gray, part of it is just the joy of not having to worry about having to color. At this point I have no desire to keep up with the nonsense part of aging. People will just have to adapt to my new look or just don't look at me. I have also given up the makeup part of my life. I do have it and will use when needed for an event but I am not going to do it everyday anymore.
 
Well aren't you just the lucky one!

I don't have the luxury of giving up on trimming eyebrows, ears, and nose hair. Women sure have it easy!
 
Women consider gray with highlights? I think a bit of gray looks distinguished.

As for me, I will just keep my hair short. I would only consider a small hairpiece that showed a receded hairline. These wigs that are big mops of hair on an old man look ridiculous!

I don't color my hair. It is what it is. I have grey coming through, and I'm fine with that.

I did go bald once, I think I mentioned it elsewhere. That is, I had my hair cut off. I looked absolutely horrible. I could not rock that look myself. But it does suit others, so it must be my big fat head.

I have always thought my face too big and round. Also my head seems too big for wearing those hats out of crackers at Christmas. I find curly or wavy hair suits me best, a straight style would just be wrong.

Interesting it appears that dying your hair blonde wasn’t a problem but the darker colors were. Everyone on my mom’s side of the family died from cancer so I figured it wasn’t worth the risk. It’s not proven fact and when younger I wouldn’t have quit.
 
I tried letting it grow out to show the true white/gray, but I really hated the true color. Now I'm going to try to switch to demi or semi-permanent hair color to reduce the chemicals getting on my scalp and into the hair shaft. I color it myself and have done that for years because it's so very expensive to have it done at the salon.

The demi and semi colors deposit the dye onto the hair and do not open the hair cuticle, or so I have read. They have to be redone more often, but it's about $11 a treatment so that's not too bad. The hardest part is finding a brand that doesn't come out green, reddish or dark brown when all you wanted was blond. I do a sample test on a swatch of my hair to check.

I have seen a few white-haired ladies using the semi-permanent dyes to put some blue or pink streaks in their hair. I think they look cool - cool grandmas.

You can go to a colorist and ask them to dye it whatever your natural color is, or close to your natural color. It would probably cost $75 to $125 in many places to get that done, but it's possible.

But you definitely want someone who has extra training and experience in coloring hair.

My natural color is no longer auburn but a combination of white and a dull brown. I used to pay 100 to have it done professionally. I quit 9 months ago and there’s only one way to get to my natural color and that’s to wait for it to grow out.

I just colored my hair lighter and lighter until the roots pretty much matched then there wasn't a dark demarcation line and it grew out fairly unnoticed. I think a full year to grow out completely.
I was using an ash blond at the end.
