Colour hair or gracefully grey?

I just colored my hair lighter and lighter until the roots pretty much matched then there wasn't a dark demarcation line and it grew out fairly unnoticed. I think a full year to grow out completely.
I was using an ash blond at the end.
I can see that working if my hair was one color on top. But mine is a mixture of white and brown.

It has been. Even young women in magazines were coloring their hair grey but it didn't seem to catch on very well.
I actually looked into to doing this and from what I could find, the grays and silvers wash out of your hair very quickly. You also have to bleach to level 10 (platinum) first, which if you have level 4ish/llevel 5 ish hair like mine, that would take quite a lot and at a salon, would be astronomical.

I'm also one of the "Bride of Frankenstein" victims. First streak was right in the middle of my forehead, second was down on side of my head 😄

I let my hair grow out 10 years ago. It took about 6 years for me to grow it out. It was close to 4 feet long but I cut 2 feet off. I’m going to grow it to a length that’s easy to cut.
My outter hair is silver grey, my middle hair is medium grey and the inside I has the most natural colour - reddish brown

You can go to a colorist and ask them to dye it whatever your natural color is, or close to your natural color. It would probably cost $75 to $125 in many places to get that done, but it's possible.

But you definitely want someone who has extra training and experience in coloring hair.
This post which I initially dismissed got me thinking that maybe there’s a way not to cover the white but to color the auburn section to match the brown on top. So I consulted a colorist that was recommended that specializes in doing this. So next week I’m giving it a try.

After I made the appointment a woman in my building said she did this so it didn’t look so bad while it was growing out. She said she only had to do it once. Thanks for planting the seed 😊.

I decided in High School that I wanted to become a blond, so I got some peroxide and bleached my hair. To my initial disappointment it turned dark auburn instead of blond. I eventually decided I liked it and ultimately switched to using professional dye instead of peroxide.
I continued to color it until my mid seventies, when I underwent chemo and completely lost all my hair. It grew in a nice looking mix of silvery grey and dark strands and was very wavy - almost curly. I decided I liked it and was tired of the whole dying process. It's been this color ever since - only lightening slightly in the 13 years since.

I've always been very particular about my hair and I had it colored for years (see avatar) until about 11 years ago when I started to get a very itchy scalp. It drove me nuts. I did some reading about hair dye and realized I'd become allergic to the PPD in the dye. Then, I read some really scary articles about how serious that can be and women have even died (not dyed) from the allergic reactions. I stopped cold-turkey and quit coloring my hair and haven't thought about ever doing it again. If you think about hair dyes (and tattoos) that dye (ink) is absorbed into your skin and eventually enters your blood stream. YIKES!

Most likely if you're a man, you like having lots of hair ! -- or choose the Bald Shaved route if you're of that stature .....
For the lady's many do not want Early on White Hair are my thoughts. The 50's suc is a thought for most.
I know the rinses are messy for em.

So it took 7 hours and cost 400 but my hair is now all the same 2 colors. First they had to remove as much of the auburn as they could. It was 3 different processes. I’m glad I had it done because it looks good and is a one and done.

Now it looks good as it grows out to completely my natural color. I never asked what it would cost and was surprised by the length of time it took. I left the salon at 11:30 pm.,

Wow @Teacher Terry that was a long process, you must have a lot of patience! Worth doing though as you won't need to do it again and it sounds like they did a great job. :)

I still color my hair. Two reasons:

1. My daughter, who lives with me, is going gray and hates it. So we trot on down to Walmart and buy Clairol for $3.97 a box. She gets a dark brown shade and I get a medium shade and we do each other's hair. Surprised me at how well this works. No more expensive salon dyes.

2. I was at a point that I didn't care if the grays grew out or not. I could go either way. I was curious what hubby thought so I asked him. Poor guy got that deer in the headlights look. :) After a minute or two he said "well, I've always liked the way you look when you color your hair." He also said that the Clairol looked a lot more natural in my hair than the expensive beauty salon color.

Would love to see before and after. I bet it looks great!

No they don’t bleach your hair. They removed the auburn on the bottom two thirds. It’s amazing what they can do. It doesn’t damage your hair as it’s still really soft.

Patti it’s a one time thing and now it won’t look funny as it grows out to my natural color which is now brown with white mixed throughout. I was naturally a redhead but that has changed.

How do they remove the colour of your hair without damaging bleaching or damaging it?
Can you take a pic for us to see?

I don’t really know how the process works. When they put the color remover on my hair they said it took out 80 percent of the auburn color. They added highlights which I am sure hides the 20 percent left. My hair is still super soft.
