Columbus is a very controversial figure in my community.
The Italian immigrants in our city worked for over 25 years to collect enough money and get enough support to finally erect a statue of Columbus in a circle bearing his name.
It was seen as a huge step in welcoming and assimilating the Italian American community in our city but even then there was controversy about a tribute to and for the Italian American population.
Today there has been an ongoing effort to remove the fountain and erase it from memory in the name of diversity and inclusion.
IMO if we value diversity and inclusion we should accept the relics of the past that had meaning to our parents and grandparents while making room for new monuments and tributes to people and events that have significance to current and future generations.
You don’t have to like or accept the romanticized version of Columbus that we were taught in elementary school but he’s still a part of our local community and should be accepted, not erased.

How do you "discover" something that people are already living in/on? Columbus and his men were SOBs who not only gave the indigenous people syphilis, of course they killed them after being shown hospitality. There should be no controversy. He doesn't deserved to be celebrated...period! Our credit union recognized the holiday for what is is and were closed.
