Considering the unfortunate disappearances of Jay Slater (body just found at last) and Dr Michael Moseley recently, I would say it is very wise not to go wandering off alone away from your family and friends. There really is safety in numbers. I know it sounds obvious but it would save an enormous amount of effort and grief for others.
Certain rules like having a charged up mobile, telling people where you are going and for how long. Especially in dangerous heat, difficult terrain or at night.
Having said that, over my lifetime, especially when young, I made foolish mistakes too. I was very lucky not to come to harm.
