Commonly Abused Prescription and OTC Drugs

Those things are sold on the street here by the handful.
Some people they don't care how they get their fix. Sometimes if a person can convince the doctor that they need the drugs, the insurance will pay. When we deal with someone who is under the influence we are not dealing with the real person. This can have all kinds results.

In the past couple of years, I've had a torn rotator cuff, and a root canal. In both cases, the doctor and dentist gave me a prescription for OxyContin. I took a couple of those pills, over a day or two, and they made me feel almost drunk. Luckily, I took them at bedtime...I would hate to stumble around half loopy during the day. I still have 95% of them in the cabinet, and it will take some Severe pain before I try that stuff again. I'm seriously thinking about turning them in the next time the local police have a "drug collection" event.

Well having Kaiser Permanente I don't have to "worry" about being prescribed any of the drugs mentioned in the article, they are scared to prescribe anything other than Tylenol(what a cruel joke) for anyone over 65.

For the present, I can control my OA pain with movement(Taichi, Yoga, general stretching) and a modest evening cocktail.

I read that out of every 10 prescriptions only about 2 become addicted .........
most of the common cons to get refills like " I spilled down the sink " or "they were stolen" i can't believe these are STILL working on providers to a point ......
you can see shows like Dateline types that show small towns where there are more scripts written then citizens ........

Where is the supposed crack down on DEA # and bad doctors ......... Even Barney Fife would have caught some of these rings etc.

In my area you need to give your ID and sign forms to buy OTC pseudoephedrine ( but voter ID is wrong) I guess if you have allergies you deserve to be treated as a criminal........ NOT.
We should applaud the 80 percent that can follow instructions and take as directed. I personally feel gross on any of many of the pain killers .... I don't see why anyone wants to feel that way.

We need to see context in so many things ......... less then 20 percent may become addicted but we run around like if you take any of these you are a junkie in the making..... many places are very nervous to even prescribe....

This is exactly what teachers say ........ a few obnoxious kids take most of the time and effort from everyone else.

Well, gee, I take pain drugs when I need them which can/and have included oxycodone and nighttime long acting morphine. I also use prescription pain creams and prescription pain patches. I also get spinal shots.

When you are laying in a hospital emergency room begging a doctor to kill you because you are in so much agony, when you are hallucinating your dead grandmother who was a nurse and begging her to help you, when you are in so much pain you are suicidal, when you are in a car screaming for 20 minutes and thinking of jumping out, then and only then, you can talk to me about the evils of pain medication. Just saying.

I was not saying pain medications are evil .... they serve a purpose and of course those in need of relief should be able to get medication.

I was referring to the one size fits all approach to handling the problems with the addicted .....

a friend broke his ribs ....went in and was treated as if he was a pill seeker without any reason for it .......
doctor poked hard on his ribs not taking him seriously until x-rays came back then doctor apologized for his attitude....... we are treating everyone as suspect in many cases while giving the benefit of doubt to some that are abusing pills.
Pain is not something that can be measured so it is on the honor system.

In the cases of many prescriptions more then a couple versions.. how is this getting by ... the pharmacies not wondering or perhaps someone is using many pharmacies ? .....
The doctors not aware of what others prescribed another person ?
Electronic records were supposed to help with that sort of thing.

i saw a TV commercial for some new drug ....saying " tell you doctor if you had a organ transplant ...."
seriously if a doctor is not aware of such a huge item in a medical history .... the doctor IMO should not be prescribing anything.......

I am wondering with all these tele -medicine visits now ....will this make it easier for the drug seeking patient ?

My daughter is a pharmacist and has a host of stories she could tell. She can spot a fake script a mile away! She knows the doctors who prescribes pain pills and knows how much they prescribe. If she has a script from a doctor she has not filled scripts for in the past, she calls his office to check it out. She is not going to lose her license over a fake script. Of course she is an old school pharmacist and says a lot of the younger pharmacists are taken in by some patients.

This is a good example ... I am sure there are others like your daughter that have a conscience .........
It does not seem if much is done about the " suspicious doctors" / prescribing persons as now practicing nurses and PAs can write them too.

I suppose if they did find a bad Doctor and then followed through with the pharmacy / pharmacist .....
but it must be the pharmacy must claim ignorance that they did not notice a pattern etc..... Makes me wonder what those people "working on this problem" are doing.......
perhaps we just don't see the results .... deals made in secret to keep a professional license etc.

In our state drugs are tracked and a pharmacy can see when you filled last and what it was for. I had a problem in an ER once. The doctor spoke to my pain management doc, came back and apologized.

I have a friend whom is in same boat for pain management issue ....... questioned often about the length of time on drug etc.
has actually had to be assessed by a second doctor .... then was offered hypnosis / acupuncture trials to see if they could cut off meds.

With that said drugs are tracked in most places but this is still happening ............ I think there is a gap between what the system is said to be doing .............and what it actually does.
Obviously it is not catching enough of the bad actors while others in your shoes are repeated questioned.

Well, doctors are lazy. If they looked they would see I’ve had a million spinal MRI’s and if they saw the MRI’s they would understand. Even my middle spine, which is usually safe and without issues, is crap. I can be fine one day and the next day I am screaming in pain and wheelchair bound. 🤦🏻‍♀️

It's the government. They are pressuring doctors to lower all these type drugs and to limit the prescriptions. Doctors have told me this. They've felt threatened and not being able to stand up to the feds won't stand up for their patients either.
