They end them that way so that they CAN have another season or a sequel.
It's the same with books today. It seems that authors are turning toward writing "series" books instead of "free-standing" novels.
You plug away through the book, hoping to find out if the character IS the killer or IS an alien or IS the long-lost sister and the book ends with "Then he looked her in the eye and walked away."
What the .....? COME BACK HERE AND WRITE AN *ENDING* FOR PETE'S SAKE! No, you have to read the second book in the "XYZ Series" and, of course, the library only has book 3.

The one that irked me- was on network t.v.- Seventh Heaven.
It was impossible to figure out if the main character (the father) really was cured of his terminal illness, or whether he only wanted his family to think so so they could all have a nice vacation together.
It might have been suitable as a cliffhanger, but not the last show of the series.

Many shows end like that ........
i can understand when they are being canceled and they do not have an exit strategy .......
anymore i think some leave on cliffhanger hoping for a resurgence or call to return to screen on another network or streaming service.....
..
we have watched some older shows we had not seen before.......... watched one show that had the best ending i have ever seen ....
one character wrapped up with various scenes of where are they now type outcomes...
Example : character b married the girl he was dating and they expect a baby ..... character c got a promotion and is now doing this etc was a rather large ensemble cast ... so it covered all main cast.
really gave closure to the series

Yep, one such show was[LA's Finest] the darn thing kept my attention week to week but they pulled the plug!!!
