Congratulations to all born the twenties right to the seventies

first you servived being born to mothers who smoked or drank
while they carried us

they took aspirin ate blue cheese didn't get tested for diabetes

cots were covered with bright coloured lead based paints

you had no childproof lids on medicine bottles
no locks on cabinet doors

and when you rode your bikes you had no helmets

as children you would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags

you ate dripping sandwiches sugar sandwiches fry ups for breakfast

no flu jabs makes you wonder how we survived lol

And yet we did. I'd hate to be a child now -- everything seems so regulated for them. What happened to the simple joy of riding your bike all over the place with your friends during the summer, playing baseball in the street until the streetlights came on, exploring the neighborhood, climbing trees and such? Most kids would never be allowed to do those things (and many, many more fun things we did) now. I wouldn't have missed all that for the world.

So very true Butterfly. I'm glad I grew up in the 50's and was able the experience all that you mention and then some. Today I was driving home from the store and noticed a child with a helmet, safety belt, elbow pads, and knee pads, wearing an over size pair of sun glasses most likely to keep out all those harmful sun rays. I'm sure what little skin he had left exposed was slathered with some kind of cream for sunburn protection. The funny part of this whole thing was that his Dad was riding the bicycle and the kid was in a cart attached to the back of it not even six inches off the ground. It just made me laugh and feel sorry for the kid all at the same time. It must have taken the Dad three hours to strap him in.

I've just seen a bloke
cutting the grass near me
he looks like a spaceman

overalls boots earmuffs safety goggles a mask on
he's sweating like a pig

i mow my lawn in me slippers
how Times have changed

But a lot of kids didn't make it due to war, famine and disease, for example, polio...

Hmmn .. Not quite my experience

Congratulations to all born the twenties right to the seventies

first you survived being born to mothers who smoked or drank while they carried us
Mine was a Methodist - no beer and ciggies for me.

they took aspirin ate blue cheese didn't get tested for diabetes
Aspirin yes, but blue cheese? Never. She only ate a strange concoction made by Kraft and wrapped in silver foil wrapping.

cots were covered with bright coloured lead based paints
Mine was stained timber and varnished. No lead.

you had no childproof lids on medicine bottles No
no locks on cabinet doors no again but the medicine I remember most was castor oil. I had no desire to self medicate

and when you rode your bikes you had no helmets
What bike?

as children you would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags
What car? And taxis were not often affordable. We mostly travelled on the train or a bus.

you ate dripping sandwiches sugar sandwiches fry ups for breakfast
Never. I ate left over mutton or cold savoury mince sandwiches for school lunch and left over stew gravy on toast for breakfast. Or a boiled egg with toast fingers.

no flu jabs makes you wonder how we survived lol
No flu jabs but penicillin was delivered in the form of an injection in the leg.
This was a strong incentive not to get sick.

We had no TV either but that is probably the main reason we survived to adulthood ???
