They are now the most common pet. They outnumber dogs probably because of our active life styles with so many families with both parents working. Cats don't have to be walked...
 

We always had cats and dogs and cats are easier. When we had just cats we would leave them for a day or two with plenty of food and water and extra clean litter boxes. They were fine but snubbed us for days after. We had one that could carry a grudge for over a week.
 
Yeah, dogs require much more care than cats. I think it's a toss up with cleaning the liter box or cleaning up after a dog. With dogs, you are the head of the pack, so they want you to lead. They want action, and to do stuff. With cats, if their food dish is full and there's water, they really don't care if you're alive.

Depends on the cat, ask any Siamese owner!

A stupid mutt will lie around all day and wolf down anything remotely edible which you yjtow its way.

A Siamese will expect nice tasty food freshly served, and it had better not be the same flavour as was offered yesterday, let alone the other half of the same can!
 
We've always owned cats for the inside. We had an outside dog once but never inside. Cats are quieter most of the time during the night. Plus, as was mentioned above, cats don't have to be walked and rarely do we have to clean the floor up after them. I would rather clean a litter box than to clean up after a dog. I like dogs as long as they belong to someone else. :)
 
Cat and dog lover here, have always had both. Cats are easier in the walking outdoors department, but dogs are great for those who are home a lot and have the time for them.
 
I prefer dogs because I like the interaction and the companionship and nothing beats that "You're my hero!" look that an adoring dog will give you.

I have two friends who have more than one cat, and their houses stink! I don't like that. I don't know if they are unable to smell it, or if they just don't care, but one of the houses in particular is positively overpowering. If I go over there for some reason, I never stay more than a few minutes, for that reason. The house is otherwiase well kept, but that smell . . . .
 
Only joined Planet Dog around ten years ago and I'm hooked. Cats since I was five. But In a TV show...the world after people. If humans disappeared instantly. If our cats could get outside they would form colonies. All for the common good. Kill prey and bring it back for everything to devour. The bigger the better.

Domesticated dogs for the most part might die. The odd squirrel won't feed a pack. Dogs like my Sophie? Canine aggressive and no one to open cans. She would starve right off. Callie would get along but be leery of killing large prey. "Wait, did the human's say we could do this???". Maybe yes, maybe no.
