Considering Buying an Old Classic Muscle Car

You can officially call it my mid life crisis car.

Any suggestions on what I should purchase? Can I get anything decent for 40-50k?

Depends... there are a lot of cars out there. Some good, some not.
Unfortunately, most mid 60's muscle cars (especially Mopars) are fetching crazy money.

Keep in mind that a lot of cars are being called classic's or muscle when in reality, they're just old cars. For instance, there are a lot of late 60's Chevelles that started out as 6 cyl clunkers, but now, they sport a bigger engine and maybe some flashy paint and they're being called muscle cars. Unless they have changed out transmissions, rearend, suspension pieces, they are what we call in the business (an old whore in a new dress).
I should also add that one should be mechanically inclined or very well off as nobody works on these cars cheaply.

A quick facebook search showed cars like this that are well within your price range. (with maybe a little left over).
1968 Chevelle 350 cid motor Turbo 350 trans Power steering Power front disc brakes Ice cold air conditioning Stereo 12 bolt rear end Painted in 12/24Interior is in great condition Car shows well and drives great. $39,500

Depends where you are. In the Southwest, nothing rusts, so everything is available (40-50K will get you a reasonable fixer upper, if you're in the market for a Nova or a classic Mustang).

If you're in the soggy parts of the country, lots of luck.

I wouldn’t spend any more than I could afford to lose.

Years ago, I worked with a man that used to look for interesting older vehicles that he felt had lost most of their value due to depreciation and might be ready to have future value as collector cars.

He and his son spent much more time studying and looking than they did buying but every once in a while they found an opportunity to purchase a sleeper in good condition.

He and his wife always had interesting daily drivers and enjoyed the process as much or more than the vehicles themselves for about the same money as the average person that makes a monthly car payment.

Good luck!

Shouldn't be any problem. Just search Ebay, FB Marketplace, Craigslist, or Autotrader.
A lot of it depends on what muscle car appeals to you, and if you want to do minimal work or lots of it.

As with any big purchase, ”Let the buyer beware “, especially if you don’t know zip about car restoration. Just because it’s pretty, doesn’t mean that it runs like it should, regardless of whether it’s put together completely stock or the motor and drive train have been upgraded to something that won’t stay on the road if you can’t hold onto the steering wheel when you mash the gas pedal down🤠🤠

Mid life crisis? I have had a few of those. The Wurlitzer Juke Box is still in situ, playing it's vinyl records. But it's cars that you want to know about.

There's not much muscle in the old MG, come to think of it, there's not much on the driver either.
One advantage of a wimp car as opposed to the muscle version, the repair bills are not in the WTF
end of the garage spectrum.
Dressing the part is optional, not that I could ever upstage my MG.
