Cookies ended up just a pile of crumbs

I wanted to make cookies to take to a social meeting. Just plain store-bought sugar cookies, but when I tried to use cutters to stamp shapes out of them, the cookies just crumbled apart. I don't get it - they were nice and soft, not crispy.

I would try rolling out the dough and cutting them into shapes before baking them.

Ohhhhh......you can't cut out shapes from store-bought cookies?
