Corelle Dishes

We've been using Corelle dishes for a long time since our kids were kids and their children. Well, I was helping with the dishes last night after dinner, and one of the Corelle plates fell out of the strainer... Hit our new engineered flooring... and Smash... 1000 and one-pieces... Slivers of glass everywhere, Went out to the garge to get a box... and ended up with a few slivers in my foot... Also, put a little dent in our new floors. I was understanding that Corelle was not to do that... It was safe in case the grandkids dropped it or something... I was shocked at the way it shattered all over the floor...

So, one of my errands today is to get their address and send off a letter explaining what happened, and why it shatter... I have lost all faith in Corelle now and told Lorie, we are going to have to find another company that says their dining ware is safe with kids...

Has anyone experienced this before with Corelle?

I have been using Corelle for almost thirty years .
In that time only one dinner plate broken and it still looks like new.
My pattern now, Chutney , I bought in 2001 is now considered vintage.
I did telephone them at the time..( this was way back in 20012) reported it broken.
They said it was break resistant but not unbreakable but they would send a replacement
Well it never arrived.
Phoned again and unfortunately they said my pattern was no longer available.

My Corelle was bought in 1987. Only one of the cereal bowls has a chip from when I dropped it on a ceramic tile floor a few years ago.

I did discard the mugs several weeks ago. After years of removing coffee and tea stains, the glaze on the inside was gone, and they turned gray.

I know someone who recently bought a new set, and the mugs were not break resistant. (It was stated on the package) One broke just with a light bump on the faucet.

Ours are vintage 1978. One plate broke when I dropped it , and it hit on the EDGE of it, as it landed on the floor. I capitalized the EDGE because that is the one place where the plate will break. Something to do with shock on a small part of the object. The company says their product is "break resistant " not "unbreakable ". JimB.

Bought the wife a set back in the early 70's. One evening I was Bar-b-queing outside with a friend. 'This is Corelle Ware & it's unbreakable,' I said as I dropped it on the cement patio. It shattered into at least 300 tiny pieces! Nope, wasn't quite 'unbreakable'!

Mine are at least twenty years old. Only a couple of small plates have broken. Corelle was always known to shatter to smithereens if it broke. Those little plates really did explode.
When I was working for Metro Toronto Ambulance. the crew at our station bought a double set of Corelle ( enough to serve 8 people ) in 1977, and when I left the job in 1988, the dishes were still in use at station 32. Being used every day by a bunch of men who were not that carefull, shows how tough the product is. JimB.

I've saw a Corelle plate shatter into a zillion pieces, but only once. My in-laws had it for years. When they passed away we took some of their set for our RV because it stacks so compactly.

Corelle generally holds up much better than other dishes.

Yes, it can break, I would not say break but shatter into tiny little sharp shreds. It is hard to clean up, those little shards are hard to see. It might be a month later, you have swept, mopped and vacuumed many times. You walk into yhr kitchen, sharp pain and you have found another shard.

That said, I still like the product, been using it from the 70's and still now!!

I’ve used Corelle dishes throughout my adult life, but graduated from the “butterfly gold” and “avocado green” patterns. I once dated a girl who laughed about how a Corelle dish shattered on the wall when she threw it at her father. Thankfully, I didn’t marry her… 🙀

Thank you for all your wonderful replies... So, sounds like everyone has had at least one that broke... I was just shocked, and the way it shattered into millions of pieces... Well, I wrote to the company, and after reading your replies, I am not going to get too far that way either... Thanks, Ladies... and Gents...

I have used Corelle for 50+ years.Have had 3 different sets-only because I wanted to update.I think I did have one break one time-I say that only because I remember there being a million pieces-but all in all I love them. And these dishes survived through 4 teens doing dishes lol.
