Cost of eating out

I don't mean to rehash old posts, but I just picked up lunch for hubby and myself and I'm appalled. I had a coupon for Penn Station subs but when I arrived there they had gone out of business and were replaced with a Chinese restaurant. So I decided to try a new BBQ place, Mission BBQ. I got 2 pulled pork sandwiches...nothing else, and the bill was $18.21. For 2 sandwiches. Even by today's standards I feel that's outrageous. Maybe it's normal now, but that's a first and last visit by me. I should have just looked at the menu and turned and walked away, but I was pressed for time and had to get something.

My mom and I used to go out to eat every Saturday. What 2 dinners cost then, we could have bought food for a week to eat at home. This is the website which has links to their lunch and dinner menus. I'll leave it up to you to determine if their prices are reasonable.

$14.00 for a hamburger? No, not reasonable to me. Well, they do give you some fries with that, so...

I'm not necessarily defending the price but I think it's normal pretty much everywhere. Just for comparison I looked up the price of a BBQ pork sandwich at my favorite local place and it is $8.99. That's not including tax. My favorite brisket is $1 more.

A combo plate with a sandwich, a side and a drink is $13.99.

With takeout there's no tip unless there is a tip jar and then it is your choice. I don't eat out nearly as much as I used to but I still enjoy doing so now and then with friends or family. If it's just me I usually get takeout and take it back to my cave as one popular restaurant advises. :)

Didn't hurt that we had comped 1/2 price & able to use bonus points. The tip was actually more than the cost of what we ended up paying to eat.

That & bringing home $600.00 in winnings.
We don't believe that hoarding money is in our best interest. We planned on enjoying these last years.

Maybe some of these restaurants that have jacked up menu item costs due to inflation, will start offering at least a few smaller portion size options. Yes, am well aware of the one size fits all big boy mindset restaurants have. An issue I regularly criticize is food item portions tend to be huge. Especially for small folks and children like this person.

Good idea. A few years ago a group of seniors that I was involved with had a weekly lunch meeting at different restaurants. One member of the group always wanted to order from the kid's menu. There were a few restaurants that allowed it but most refused. Maybe it would be different now.

We have 3 or 4 favorite restaurants in the towns we go to occasionally, and although their prices have gone up a bit in the past couple of years, the costs are still reasonable. They all have a Seniors menu which is more than enough to fill us up...at a good discount.

I went to Wendy's a couple weeks ago and they had a junior meal for 5 dollars, and that's what I had. It was more than plenty.

I belong to 4 different groups that eat breakfast out once a month. I enjoy that. Our high school class had a breakfast, a Vietnam Veterans group dies the same, a Marine Corps group from only my county does it and a group of us that grew up in Hershey during the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s also has a once a month breakfast.

My wife and I eat out a few times a month, mostly dinner.

We don't eat out much but sometimes for convenience we stop and get something. I always feel I could make something so much healthier for so much less but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

That was a good looking menu. If the food is really good, I consider the prices very reasonable.

The fact that the place that gave their food away w coupon is closed should be a good indication that it was too cheap.

Would you rather roll up to get your bbq and pay $9 or roll up and see that it's closed?

No, they weren't cheap. They run a special on a certain food item every month which brings it down to a "reasonable" cost. The coupon I had was for a Halloween special. The location I went to was closed, but there's another Penn Station a few miles away I could have gone to if I had the time.

Every once in a while, ususlly when travelling and if we didn’t pack a picnic, we’ll get take out but reluctantly. It usually ends up costing between $30 and $40 dollars. It pays to pack a picnic plus picnics are so much nicer and more romantic.

Lunch costs around $32 including the tip, my lunch dates are few and far between. I occasionally buy subway which works out to $14 including tip which I bring home.

I usually grab fast food on the days I go pick up groceries, which is two or three times a month now. I ate at Chilis on my birthday, but all I wanted was a burger. There's not much else to choose from here. I cook more now that I am retired and anything special I make at home. I am having fun making things I never made before.

When I go to Texas I always want TexMex.
