Could vitamin D have cured my depression?

I suffered such deep bad depression I thought it would never stop. It's been at least two years, times I plunged into despair and lost interest in living. I've resisted the antidepressants route as side effects were immediate.

But lately I feel much much better. Mental and physical, my energy is returning and I feel stronger mentally and lighter, more interested in doing things. The only difference I can think of is about a month back I started taking vitamin D daily. I realised I don't get out in sunshine much and for other reasons the GP suggested vitamin D.

So I wondered if anyone else find D has helped improve health?

I bet it helped for sure! Sunshine is so amazing for your mood and I read where depression is a symptom of lack of vitamin D. Even sitting outside 30 mins a day and enjoying the sun can help you.I am glad your feeling better too!

It seems to be a good thing, at least at recommended doses. Some advocate massive doses, saying the standard dose is absurdly conservative, but even they say sunshine is preferred where possible.

The standard D3 dose seems safe and better than nothing. Your doctor is probably the place to go for answers no matter what, since there are many pieces to each health puzzle. I'm not sure why D2 is normally prescribed by doctors though. There seems to be more mystery around all of this than necessary.

Glad things are improving for you, Rose. I’ve taken vitamin D for years, as it’s recommended in Canada because of our short days in the winter and in the summer we wear sunscreen. My doctor made the suggestion years ago, yet my DDs haven’t had this advice. It’s the smallest, cheapest and easiest vitamin to take.

I feel strength returning after feeling tired and weak for so long. I just hope it carries on.
I still have the tinnitus and await an ENT appointment soon. The vertigo is controlled with pills. But despite that I feel able to live each day better and feel more resilience.
awww so happy you feel better, our Dr's office checks our vitamin levels often. Our vitamin D was low so we now take it but we still need and crave that sunshine too!

Vitamin D is very important especially during the shorter sunlight sessions. Sometimes that’s all that’s needed for some.

I’m on a combination of ashwagandha, GABA, vitamin D and a benzo when needed. I’ve been prescribed a new drug that’s been helping a lot.

Depression is difficult to go through.

I was making such good progress but now with the news about Israel, my anxiety levels have shot right up and I feel the despair and depression coming back.
I will distract myself best I can but my mind now registers danger all around. That doesn't make sense but it is how it is for me.

That's great to hear about the vitamin d effects, @Rose65
I hope it continues.

I know what you mean; it's very difficult to try to have all of the worrisome, horrid events not knock us over flat!
But keep trying.

I guess to each his/her own. I've been taking vitamin D for many years and it did not cure my depression but the new antidepressant seems to be helping somewhat so far. I'm glad it helped you! I've had chronic severe depression, though so maybe I need something stronger? I don't know.....

Up north where I live, vitamin D is not an option, it is a requirement due to the lack of sun most of the year! It is good for a lot of things.
It doesn't take that much sun exposure to maintain healthy levels of vitamin D so it is possible even in cold climates as long as the day is sunny. Just expose your skin for 15 min. and you should be OK.

You know, it could be the Vitamin D, or it could be due to the placebo effect. My question would be, does it matter? You're doing something, and it appears to have made you feel better. There may be a scientific reason behind it, perhaps not. But what's really important is that you feel better. So just go with it.

I am a total sun worshipper- out all the time, love the sun- I'm not super fair so I even leave the sun screen off on probably more than I should- even with that, my vitamin d levels were so low that my doctor put me on it. Mere sunlight doesn't do the job for everyone.

Also try Magnesium (look for Bisglycinate, Glycinate or Theonate formulations) and GABA supplements can help too. I like the Now Foods brand, they're affordable and good quality (at least everything I've tried of theirs)
I find Now Foods brand good also. If you need to save money, they're probably the best.
