Country Mouse or City Rat?

We used to go for a month vacation each year in the Ft. Myers/ Naples beach area. It got so crowded it finally wasn't "value received" anymore. We live in the Texas Gulf Coast area, but have an abundance of trees so our world is mostly warm and wooded!
I live in Naples. Sadly, it no longer has the small beach town atmosphere it used to have. (Especially this time of year) I saw a funny bumper sticker that said, "If it's snowbird season, why can't we shoot them?" It's a joke folks - I am in no way am implying violence.

Lived my early years in the country on a large farm ... loved that life as a kid. But after school, marriage and kids, the city burbs seemed a lot more interesting and exciting. ...and a lot more opportunity. ... Have lived near, or in, large cities since my twenties.
Suburbs are my choice for a little of both worlds.

I read that over 1/3 of the high accident rate in the area comes from North Naples...in the Airport Pulling road & Immolkee Road area. It was like a 6 lane parking lot on some days. You are right. Too many cold weather dwellers that want to come down for some warmth in the winter. We were surprised in some years at how cold it was in January! Of course, it does pad the restaurant checks...lol.

we sold all and moved to a small town to be near our daughter. ...
1500 people...no red lights...has all we need
@bingo: As much as I like the suburbs, if our children moved to a small town we'd likely do the same and adjust. At our age we wouldn't be much grist for the small town gossip mill anyway, which is one of the reasons I was happy to ditch the more rural life in my late teens.

Even so, it's hard to overemphasize the personal freedom brought by living in a city or large suburb. Endless options of places to go, new people to meet, and things to do. Youthful foolishness doesn't follow you for a lifetime (unless it involves the criminal justice system), you virtually never run into people who are intentionally no longer part of your life, and a large assortment of careers and training are available.

Life is filled with do-over opportunities because every new person you meet is a clean slate. And you never run out of new people.

As the old song went, "How you gonna keep them down on the farm after they've seen Paree?" Or in my case, a very small, exclusively Caucasian town without a single traffic signal in NJ, after the extraordinarily exciting Los Angeles in the very early 70s. It wasn't even a close call.

I live in a coastal CA city 15 miles from San Francisco. It has 425K people and we love it here. Quite a bit smaller - and more scenic - than the city of 5M in the Midwest I grew up in.

That's almost twice the size of my nearest city, Aberdeen - Scotland's 3rd largest. And your 5M Midwest city is more or less the population of Scotland. Apart from being a country boy, I've always lived near the sea and more than wanting to live in a small town / village , I wanted to live near to the sea. Fortunately, where I am, I can have both.

I live in a rural country village with a population of around 1500 people. No traffic lights, and one pub.. but we're also surrounded by other villages and hamlets with, churches, pubs and some even have a village store , but we're on the edge of a market town of 25,00 people and all the facilities needed are there (aside from A&E fascilites) .... and train stations to take us south to London within 1/2 an hour ..and any large town or city Northwards ...

I lived in the City most of my life until about 2 yrs ago. Hubby and I moved to the suburbs to be near our daughter and her family. It has been really hard for me to make the adjustment. My Husband hasn't had any problem with the move, because we have a driveway and he can park right outside our house not blocks away like he did in the City.
