Cragside was the home of Lord Armstrong, industrialist, scientist and philanthropist. This was the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity generated in a small power station in the grounds if the estate. The house is literally built on to the side of a cliff and is decorated in an 'Arts & Crafts' style and contains examples of work by William Morris, Ford Madox Brown and Dante Gabriel Rossetti amongst others.

Here are a few photos....

Part of the royal apartments built to accommodate (and impress) the Prince of Wales and family. I'm sure they were impressed as Cragside boasted electric lighting, en-suite facilities, hot & cold running water and central heating. Virtually unheard of in 1884. The picture shows the drawing room with the magnificant fire surround. This weighs 10 tons of Italian marble, carved in London and transported by ship to the north of England.
