I got this in an email ..
.
This morning I got a call saying my card had been used for a purchase over seas of $780 and the lady said some guys name. She asked if I had lost my card and I said no. She said can you get it. I did and again she told me the same stuff all over that my card would be credited, etc. I asked her what the last 4 digits of my card were. She didn't answer but asked does your card start with 416, no I said, she then tried again with another number and again I said no. She asked what is it? I said you tell me and she hung up. I called CIBC and she told me this is a scam going on and they are aware of it. I am worried that seniors will fall for it and lose money. Please pass this on.

My husband got a call like that last year. Saying they were from Discover. They were "questioning suspicious charges" . When my husband asked for more info like you did, the guy was vague in answers. Then when my husband said he was at work, and to give a call back number for him to call when he was not busy the guy started swearing at him (F word and everything) and saying they were going to cancel his card and sue him. My husband later had me call Discover and report the call. Idiots. Sad thing is that my husband, while a smart guy, is just a bit gullible when it comes to this stuff. Takes him a while to catch on to a scam.

Well, just the other day I got a phone call from Visa offering me lower interest rates. All I had to do, to talk to a representative, was enter 1 on the phone. If I wanted to be taken off their call list to push 2.....Knowing full well THAT doesn't work, I decided to push 1....Much to Sue's chagrin....

After a moment and listening to some sort of chamber music, on the line came an east indian sounding person. After the how are you today stuff, he got down to business. He could offer me much lower interest rate on my Visa credit card......Told him I had Master Card.....Suddenly he became a Master Card Representative and he asked me what my current interest rate was on my card.....Asked HIM what the rate was, he being a master card representative.

It was, at this point, he figured out I wasn't going to be a victim of his obvious scam.....He got quite nasty and called me a LUMBERJACK!!! Then he hung up. A lumberjack. Well, at least he didn't call me sissy boy.

I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK
I sleep all night and I work all day
I cut down trees, I skip and jump
I like to press wild flowers
I put on women's clothing and hang around in bars
He cuts down trees, he skips and jumps
He likes to press wild flowers
He puts on women's clothing and hangs around in bars
I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK
I sleep all night and I work all day
I cut down trees, I wear high heels
Suspendies and a bra
I wish I'd been a girlie, just like my dear Papa

When you get a call, just do as one of my family members says he does. He says he answers saying "Sheriffs Dept how can I help you" and then he said they hang up.

Thanks Ken, glad you were too smart to be taken in. I'm very suspicious of these scam callers, had the IRS scam, etc., to give me personal experience. Sad that there's so many people out there looking to steal from the innocent folks.

Ken, thanks for the warning. This sounds like a very clever scam, and easy to fall for, even for those who are pretty savvy.

FYI - he asked if the first numbers were 416 because then he would know the type of card you have...

  • 3 - travel/entertainment cards (such as American Express and Diners Club)
  • 4 - Visa.
  • 5 - MasterCard.
  • 6 - Discover Card.
  • and then he would know more about how to continue the attempt at scamming you.

One thing my wife says to me a lot...….."you're definitely not a naïve Senior". And, she is right.
