Crisis in Wisconsin

A month ago, the town of La Crosse, WI, which had a very low number of cases, and no deaths in nursing homes, reopened its three colleges. Apparently it's a big party town, and there were few if any restrictions. People (probably mostly young people) packed into restaurants, no masks required, etc.

A month later, that little town recorded 19 deaths, all of them in people over 60. It was described as "spreading like wildfire." One researcher compared the outbreak to a large fire, which can throw off sparks that start additional fires." Medical workers are overwhelmed and heartbroken, and more and more old people are dying alone.

Apparently, that state has managed to thwart restrictions on public gatherings, and fights against any mask requirements or any other measures to protect the public health. So much for "herd immunity."

I read quite a few pages of content regarding the Coronavirus and most of the journalists, doctors and others are having a problem with putting their finger on just any single reason as to why they are seeing this sudden spike. Some believe that the students at the college are to blame. Others kind of give numerous reasons like; failure to follow the rules of wearing a mask and being pro active with maintaining social distancing.

I did read that they are doing contact tracing in hopes of being able to find the reason. Time will tell.

Now that the warmer weather is ending, I suspect the numbers of people infected will begin to rise substantially, as more and more congregate indoors. It seems as if about half the population is not following the mask and distancing guidelines, and that is going to make for a long and hazardous Winter.
