Crows are rather clever

My neighbour throws bread out on the lawns for the birds.
I place a large bowl of water out there for them because of the heat wave.
The bread dries out quickly in the heat.
I watched a Crow get a piece of the dry, hard bread, drop it in the water, wait a few seconds, then get it out and eat it.

yes I think everyone knows that about Crows..and Ravens.. Raven are harbingers of Bad luck so they say... crows give me the heebies... we don't get many crows where I live.. but in the urban towns there's loads.. and the ravens are so HUGE they're the size of full grown cats.. or small dogs...

When I was growing up on the Farm I could spend an entire day Plowing, Disking etc. The Crows would come down and land 1/4 mile away but would never let me get close to them while I was plowing or disking and they were most likely hunting food. They knew what a McDonalds
burger bag was too.

I love Crows and Magpies I used to have a pet magpie as a youngester, but a lady shot him becase he used to poo on her front porch.
birds are alot more inteligent than what humans give them credit for.
I have five magpies that visit here evey morning for a drink of water I leave for them, and some dog food, one will come and eat out of my hand,I try not to leave food every day as they might become too dependant on it.

That's amazing! I had started a thread recently on SF on talking birds and found a few videos of crows that talked. Whenever I saw crows up in the trees, they were usually squawking as I walked by (probably talking about me, lol) and I would usually look up and squawk back at them. I surprised them every time. They usually flew away but sometimes they stopped their squawking and listened to me, probably wondering what I was trying to tell them, haha.

Edited: Here's one of the videos on a talking crow:

I first became acquainted with the saucy magpies when I lived in Adelaide. I am sad to hear about your pet magpie being shot :(

Unfortunately there are no ravens where we live, since they are more common in the Eastern parts of Germany. My wife and me love crows also. We feed them during winter until May. At our former residence it was heartwarming to watch them coming back in spring with their youngster to our garden. Here we have crows, magpies, jays and of course the small birds coming for food. And the same again, the jays come with the youngster.

I bought a crow call but never had a lot of luck attracting any or getting any that I’ve seen to talk to me.
I had the crow call with me one day when I saw a flock- murder of them on a road so I stopped just around the corner of the intersection and called. A couple of them flew over my car and were smart enough to know that my car wasn’t a crow and warned the others to stay away!
So I drove around the corner to see what they were feeding on and it was a dead skunk in the road.
I went home and told my wife that we need dead skunks if we want to attract crows.
Just joking!

Yeah, same here. I leave it in the bird bath and later when I go back, all the bread is gone.

We toss Walnuts and Peanuts out on a patio for crows and squirrels. I have a crow story I’ve told before, but here it is again.

I parked a car in a lot in front of a local convenience store, got out, and there was this pathetic crow, broken wing dragged along beside him. A truly pathetic sight. I went in the store, bought a pastry, tore off a chunk, and threw it to the poor crow. He grabbed it and flew up on the roof. (-8
I’ve read that crows use the same act to lure predators away from their nest. Smart birds those crows.

They are one of my favorite birds, extremely intelligent. A crow remembers people and faces. If you are mean to a crow they remember it forever. :)

I’ve seen a video of a road intersection with a nearby walnut tree. Crows liked the walnuts, but couldnā€˜t crack the shells, so they dropped walnuts in a nearby crosswalk and waited for cars to crush the shells. When the light changed they would fly down and grab the nut fragments. That is just one example of crow intelligence, the Internet is replete with others.
