Doing the rounds again.

If you are still working and used the copier at work to do some private work???

Did you know that it recorded everything on a hard drive within the machine?

I've always wondered about this anytime I go into a post office or office supply stores to get copies made. Then when Staples went to the card to pay for copies you knew how much like a computer these copiers are. My fear is what the current employees or service technicians could pull off. This is one reason I bought a fax machine/copier a few years ago. It's more expensive to keep these machines fed with paper and ink but much more secure.

Also remember this anytime you throw out a personal fax machine, copier, printer, computer.

But the problem here it's not just what you do. How many times have you submitted personal information for benefits, a job, a lawyer etc. Even if you handed it to them the office staff needs to make copies for various reasons. These companies and organizations should be required to remove or destroy anything storing personal data.

Keep in mind it is still crime to illegally use personal information and stuff like this would actually make it more trackable. But what good is that once a used machine is shipped overseas?

Thanks for posting this. I did not know about it.

Could a person remove the hard drive and beat it with a hammer to destroy it?

You would need to dismantle the casing of the drive before attacking the unit with a hammer

The other foolproof way to render data unrecoverable is to drill two to three holes with a quarter-inch drill bit through the drive platters.

If you are unable to do this yourself ask a friendly neighbour and watch him doing the operation

Eye protection should be used with both methods.

If you have a computer or photocopier (with hard drive) that you no longer require?

Special software is available which will wipe the drive without destroying it and you can safely pass the equipment on to someone who might appreciate it
