Dash cams, do you have one

For those who still drive, do you have dash cams in your vehicle(s). I do not, but I am giving serious thought to it.

There are a lot of U.S. states where road rage is high. Tennessee is one.

The day a family laid their 24 yr old family member to rest who was on his way to work, the pair who shot him was arrested, thanks to TDOT SmartWay cams. This is only a year or two after a nurse was shot and killed on her way to work; her killers were also caught but probably thanks to the HUGE reward.

There’s a push for TDOT to install more cameras on the state highways and I think their sections of the interstates.

It seems dash cams could also be beneficial.

I think that is one of the reasons I am afraid to drive any distance and surely not on the highway. People just go crazy, don't go slow, don't use a blinker, don't respect a stop sign, you must go over the speed limit or you are run over.....I really don't know how to drive anymore.

I guess it makes sense. I learned in the 70's in what was a country town. We are surrounded by a major metroplex now. I prefer a small country town!!

I thought about getting a dash cam. But with electronics, you get what you pay for. The "el cheapos" aren't that great. Adequate front and rear cams cost a lot, which was way more than I wanted to spend. Unless you are extremely comfortable with installing electronics, you'll need to have it professionally installed.

Yes I do. But it’s still in the box. Must get it hooked up soon. 👀
If it’s front and rear and requires wiring, I would consider asking the techs at Best Buy if they do it. They do make dash-cams that don’t require wiring and either stick to the dash or the front w/s.

The one in my vehicle even runs while parked.

What kind do you have?
If ever you need to buy another, would you buy the same brand/type?
The one in my vehicle is a CamPark DC45. It took me over 2 hours to install it. They have much easier cameras out now that are much easier to install. If you get a front and rear camera, it’s likely going to make you run wiring from the front to the rear. My recommendation is to try to avoid having to run wiring, unless you really enjoy doing that type of work. I was frustrated doing mine, but I got it done.

Thx for the info 911.
I’d have to find a place to install it. But i would like to get one. I shot an inquiry to a place online that specialized in them but never heard back & then i got sidetracked.

What got me thinking about it is that a couple months ago as i was backing out of a parking spot at Walmart, a lady backed into the SIDE of my car doing just over $3,000 worth of damage. She acknowledged full responsibility & was very apologetic. But then after her insurance company got ahold of her she recanted & said the accident was my fault.

My car has been repaired but the case is in arbitration & may be in that status for up to a year. So i was left thinking HUMPH! this’ll never happen to me again, i’m gonna get a dash cam! After looking at them online tho i was left with the impression that even both a front and rear cam wouldn’t have captured being hit on the SIDE of the car.

But i still think it’s an excellent idea to have one.
You just never know what’s waiting to happen🙀

I have one in my wife’s car and my SUV, but she doesn’t like hers because it makes a clicking noise to let the driver know the memory card is nearly full and is preparing to loop.

Considering the local chat I read about jerk drivers doing stupid things, I think it’s a great idea. DH doesn’t want one.

I wish cars came pre-wired for them. Of course, they’d charge a fortune.

After every major traffic event, police are always asking for dashcam coverage of anyone that had been in that area. They want any proof they can get about the behaviour of the drivers. They also ask if there’s been a major event in a neigbourhood.

We have one in each our cars. Aside from recording an accident if needed it makes me a better driver. If the accident is my fault and I erase the video and they can prove it I am in way bigger trouble for destroying evidence. Probably a felony if they want to pursue it. I try to remember it's watching me when I drive.

Just ordered mine. Highly recommended, so I don't know if it will be useful, but one doesn't plan on auto accidents or road rage.

The funny thing as an aside, I was probably about 12 years old when I saw my first incident of road rage. It was a simple matter of somebody turned in front of someone else.

No fender bender, just the person ran over to the car, tried to open the door. Next thing you know, somebody's throwing stuff. They closed the door and drove away. But that was to me the dawn of road raging.

Now it's to the point of shooting each other.

There are cameras that video the side of your car. With a front camera that also has side view cameras and a rear camera, you would have 360 degrees of coverage. There are also cameras that will run after you have parked in a lot and you’re inside a store. It runs on motion. So if your car is sitting in a lot and another car is backing out near your car, the camera will record.

I bought mine from Amazon and installed my wife’s and mine. The first one I did took just over 2 hours and the second one I installed took less than that. If you have or know of someone that’s mechanically inclined, ask them to install it. I would get a front and rear camera, but that’s up to you. I understand that Best Buy also installs these cameras.
