Dealing with someone with hearing loss

Seems like OP is dealing with someone's stubbornness more than the hearing problem. I would consider just let it go if all attempts fail. Misunderstanding with the waitperson is not the end of the world.
 

A TV ad by a local furniture store in December said they were having a urine sale when I finally realized it was a year end sale.

More recently, I was watching a TV documentary about Mark Twain. The narration I heard was, "He visited the Hawaiian Island where he was able to witness a killer whale erection." Of course, it was actually a Kīlauea eruption.
