Dear Facebook, you're fired!

All social media is full of fake content now days - it has gotten very frustrating, I agree.

I avoid anything that isn't from friends and family on Facebook, and only watch cat / animal videos and cooking stuff - for the most part - on the others. Sadly, it seems to be the same ole thing over and over, not nearly as creative as it used to be. :(

Hey, did you hear that Paul McCartney is donating all profits from his archived catalog and future music releases (estimated at $160 million) to global health initiatives, climate protection, and music education programs?

It's pure Facebook B.S. 🤣
Lol, I saw a similar post but it was Neil Young I think...

There are very few friends on facebook from years ago. I would shut it dowm but there is one woman who posts daily amd her opinions are similar to mine. She is much braver and more outspoken than I and I enjoy her rants.

I find facebook useful - groups communicate via it and I like seeing news fro m family and friends. I post my ow n photos now and then.

Like everything, you can use it how yo u want and ignore the parts you don't.

I’ve never had Facebook…..putting my life out there for all the world to see is not my thing!
You do realize that on FB as on any social media you control what you tell other users about your life.

Back when FB was demanding individuals use 'real names' i knew people from other sites that simply used real sounding names. Others made up ones you would have expected the site to question. I was glad i used my real one--it not only allowed my adult sons and i to reconnect with some of their deceased father's relatives i'd lost track of but a with a friend i hadn't talked to in over 30 years.
As with many things it is all in how you use it.

@Nathan
Totally understand your frustration. And its gotten worse this past year. However, i'm generally pretty good at putting stuff on 'mental ignore' and scrolling by them.
I have both relatives and friends there, my sons who live in other states included. We use FB messenger instead of texting frequently. They call on special days too, but messenger is easy and free. Plus my daughter and i use FB messenger when she's at work. Sometimes she needs to vent about a rude or dumb customer so she doesn't sound grouchy to the next one. Just typing out the problem helps her let it go.

I go on FB daily. A lot of my family and friends post frequently so it's easy to stay in touch. There are a few groups that I am a member of. One is Canadian Seniors that I like. Many good jokes and interesting people. No politics or religion. I have also sold a number of items on fb Market Place and purchased some as well. I can sort through what I'm interested in and block a lot of the ads and such that I'm not.

I'm never on Facebook, so my friends know that I am not going to Like their posts or wish them a Happy Birthday. However, during the few occasions I have checked I see mostly junk that is political. No thanks.

To you and anyone else here who's sold items on Marketplace, Craigslist, etc., are you ever advised of safety precautions- or isn't it necessary in the areas where you live?

If you mean by safety precautions, I believe they have a disclaimer and a list of things to be weary of.

I mean locally, people are advised to do the transactions in public places, PREFERABLY at a police station.. because so many individuals get physically attacked, robbed, etc.

I don't post on FB unless it's picture of animals or nature scenes because I enjoy them. The only reason I keep FB is to stay in contact with my ex sister-in-law. We have been friends for over 50 years and her husband is jealous of me and my deceased brother ( they've been divorced for probably over 40 years) so we message each other in private through FB so he doesn't give her a hard time.

You can change what you get. Put dumb stuff on ignore or block it. I get stuff like this on Facebook:

I've blocked a lot of things, but it seems the more I block, the more FB replaces it with more things I'm not interested in. Also, if I read something that I think is bogus, I will google it to see if it's legit or not. I liken some of it to the old National Enquirer. I haven't looked at one for years, but I remember reading things in it that was actual breaking news before the news hit legitimate news stands. It was usually of the medical sort. Then again, most of it was fictitious like a lot of things AI puts on FB. You just have to use some discretion.

I will be returning to Facebook from time to time for important family and friends events, but it occurred to me to make further attempts at cleaning up the obnoxious garbage, so I Googled "how to decrapify facebook" and got some very good specific suggestions. One in particular I like:
Use the "Friends" feed bookmark: Access a friends-only feed with significantly less sponsored or suggested content by bookmarking the URL Facebook - log in or sign up

Decrapifying" Facebook

My Mom read both the Enquirer and the Globe, and i was a voracious reader,so i did go thru them. I seem to recall one of them broke the Christine Jorgensen story before main stream media did, as well as one about a man who awakened after a long Coma saying he was unaware of his physical state because he experienced a 'life' that as real to him because it had ups and downs like his regular life.

Also, they had some articles about sex trafficking long before our regular media even mentioned it. Tho those did usually revolve around foreigners like Middle Eastern royalty, Fortunately my Dad had taught me about assessing sources of info, so the tabloid were similar to comic books to me: They might occasionally make accurate observations about human behaviors, but that doesn't make them reliable sources of info.

I don't participate in Public postings, people seem to relish in anonymous hostility. I really don't see much activity from family or friends, which is the only reason I originally had for FB.
This may sound crazy but being kind of a balance to the anonymous hostility is also something i do on FB. Not only do some the of the angry hostile people insist on making negative comments on innocuous pet centric and artsy pages but as more people from targeted demographics have been expanding their presence, usually with much good humor, there are people who follow them for the purpose of harassing them. (More than one admitted this after various people said "Do you not understand how FB works?" When they complain about someone showing up on their feeds.)

Most of the time i just add to the high count of positive reactions, or leave some kind or appreciative of their humor words.
