Dentures & gum cleaning

So I finally got a set of full dentures after having major dental issues for most of the past few decades.
I've tried using Polygrip & Seabond to keep them in place. I've no issue w/ poligrip holding them in place, but when i take the dentures out at night, i spend at least half an hour getting all the adhesive off the gums & palate. I've tried mouthwash to loosen the adhesive, then a toothbrush etc etc..long, messy, tastes & feels horrible.
Seabond simply hasn't offered anywhere near the hold capacity :(
For the poligrip, am I missing a step somewhere, or is spending a half-hour drooling and blehing on the feel/taste something i just haft suck up & deal with?
I've had them in-hand for almost 10 days now, but I'm loathe to wear them for any amount of time as I'd rather not deal with such a distasteful cleanup routine every night, and yet I'm really missing biting & chewing a meal (something I've not been able to do since fall of last year). Any help/advice/direction greatly appreciated.
 
I have only an upper denture. After doing dental studies for GlaxoSmithKline and getting denture supplies for free or at a deep discount, I tried Poligrip. I don't remember it being too difficult to get off the denture. I hardly used it. My gums provide like a "shelf" for the denture so I don't need to use an adhesive at all. I can even bite into an apple without using the Poligrip. In fact, years ago my dentist told me to not to use adhesives after that flap about them being unsafe.

@OldOld How long have you had your implants? Any problems with them at all?
 
I have a full set of traditional dentures and don’t use any sort of dental adhesive.

The dentures do move but only cause a significant problem with some sticky foods like caramels or certain types of chewing gum.

They will never act like your original teeth and it does take a little time to learn to live with them, maybe even a trip or two to the dentist to have them ground down a bit if persistent sores develop.

I would give them a good cleaning, to remove the adhesive, and try using them, full time, for at least a month to get used to them.

I have 3 individual tooth implants. I got first 2 implants 10 years ago. The third implant was done 1 year ago. There is no problem so far. I use denal floss every time after I ate. I am currently getting another implant but this one is not going well. I believe the dentist is not doing a good job this time. I am considering moving to another dentist. After my tooth extraction, he should have waited until all my root canal infection healed before putting in any bone graft material. So, after 3 months the bone graft failed, and the graft material has to be removed . I am already out $1800 and got nothing done. I was basically paying for his learning.

I'm sorry that happened to you! The reason I asked is because from the start, I was leery about implants. Then I heard a dentist say her mother was having such problems with them and that made me more leery. I hope you can find a competent dentist and get this resolved.

I use both seabond and a thin layer of polygrip.

I am having the same problems removing the adhesive. I hate these dentures. Only wear them when I go to town and I remove them as soon as I get back home. If you find a way to deal with the adhesive, please post it here!
 
I wear a complete upper denture since October 2025. I like it but since it is my temporary denture it needs adhesive for some time. I'll get a new one this month and hope that it will stay in place without adhesive.
Perhaps you are using too much of adhesive. If I put on adhesive in the morning I can remove my denture at night without any problem and there is not much adhesive left in my mouth.

You can try to use a small cleaning cloth with cooking oil to remove the adhesive. This is the advice on my adhesive package. Since I only use small dots of adhesive I didn't need it until now.

I'll never get implants since I don't like holes drilled into my jawbone. You can even get peri-implantitis with implants thus not much difference to normal teeth and periodontitis.
And then there is the possibility of implant illness, not only with breast implants but also with tooth implants.

Use less adhesive. You don't need that long string they show on the box. If this is an upper, see your dentist. It shouldn't be that loose that it won't stay in place.

My insurance will replace dentures every 5 years. Due to my rate of bone loss about year 3 they aren't
fitting as well anymore. So I have to make due and adjust what I eat.
I too lean towards thinking you are using too much adhesive. Also make sure you are using the No -Zinc
because the Zinc leaves a nasty film on your gums.
I began using a mouthwash by Oral Gel called Gum Detox, they have toothpaste as well and it made a big difference
in getting that residue off the gums and dentures. The mouthwash also knocks out any sore spots from the dentures
that may arise really fast.
If I feel a sore spot when brushing gums I use the mouthwash about 3-4 times a day without teeth in and no more soreness.
I put ONE dot on the sides and front of the gum line and a small line on the roof section about 1/4 inch of upper plate.
On the lower one dot in the front and a 1/4 inch line on the back of each side that fits to the rear of your mouth.
Good luck in finding your solution, it can be a tricky thing to find.
 
Welcome aboard Vetus!! and great first topic !!! cause I too have issues with getting all the "glue" off
my dentures in the evening...I in fact having been going without my dentures just because of the aggravation....wish I could advise but just am going
with the flow on this one....my dentures are from 1996, and still fit okay, just have the issue of the glue!!!

Follow your gut and go to another dentist. I had a dentist build a bridge with two implants, I knew it wasn't going correctly and even had a consultaion with another dentist who agreed it wasnt correct. Stupid me didn't want to start the procedure over so let the first dentist finish, he assured me it was "rock solid". I got three years out of it before it broke loose, I had to have the bridge cut and the implant popped right out, an exspensive lesson.
