Diabetes Retested-I'm Confused

I've written about my diabetes before, my new doctor had doubts if I really had it? So she sent me to be re-tested. Well I got the results the nurse said the test read "Normal"? I asked does that mean I can Stop taking medication? She said if the doctor didn't say to Stop taking it? To keep taking it??? To Me Normal meant I didn't have it? Then she said if I want more information I need to go in to see the doctor. What the HECK???

Well, I'd sure go in and see the doctor and see what he says before I'd stop taking the medicine. Perhaps the medicine is what is bringing your readings down to where they are supposed to be. That's why they give you the medication -- to bring your sugar levels down.

Your new doctor should be the one explaining your results - not the nurse. Diabetes medications have real risks - some of them serious, so you are entitled to a clear explanation. Or, stop seeing that doctor.

Not knowing about you diabetes, but if all normal now, that tells me that your meds are helping along with what you are doing for excercise and diet... If I do as I just mentioned, my numbers are perfect, but one slip up, and I'll be fighting highs or lows for a few days! I would check with the doctor, but I be very surprised if they took you off them, They might cut it back and try...

Talk to your doctor!!!!! This can't be stressed enough!

Diabetes is a serious disease that, if mismanaged, can result in amputations or death.

We here mean well and want to help when you ask questions, but we are not doctors. Even if we were, treating you in a forum is just wrong and could be dangerous if you don't understand our answers.

You need your doctor to explain the results of your blood work and what made the results what they are.

In fact, as an aside I will also say I am against giving any medical advice at all on a forum for any disease without prefacing it with something like:

"IT'S BEST TO SEE A DOCTOR WITH YOUR QUESTIONS, but as a non medical professional, I have heard........."

One can never tell when the wrong advice is taken and a person gets sick. Maybe files a lawsuit.

Best wishes Pat and stay well!

If you are TAKING MEDICATION, then normal test results likely mean that THE MEDICATION is doing its job and keeping your blood glucose in control. If you didn't need the medication, your results would have probably have been too LOW. Like RR said, talk to your doctor. You keep posting the exact same nonsense here and when people offer advice you whine.

It's best to find out from the doctor. The test can be "normal" and you can still have it. My tests have been normal and I still have it--have to keep monitoring to keep it normal.

Ditto!
Good info RaddishRose!

Yea, I'll see her Friday. My mother n sister in law have been misdiagnosed and don't have it. Calling my test Normal? Makes me think I don't have it. How am I supposed to know if I don't have it? A doctor who my daughter work's with, says taking medication when you Don't have it can be Dangerous too?

Diabetes is nothing to screw around with. Talk to your doctor and do what he/she says to do and, with respect, quit trying to second guess the professionals. If you need a second opinion, get one -- from a doctor, not your mother or sister-in-law or the internet, or a bunch of laypersons. Your life depends on managing this problem properly.

I only said that my mother n sister in law where misdiagnosed. So then it could happen to me? You misunderstood that. And I'm not trying to second guess my doctor, it doesn't make sense, why she would say my test are Normal and nothing is Wrong? You should say... "You still have diabetes" still take medication. It's Dangerous taking medication when there's Nothing Wrong? I read about a woman who was misdiagnosed with cancer and took chemotherapy, she became seriously I'll. I have seen other doctors and they said the same I'm Fine" Doctors make mistakes, so you think there Non Human?

Your concerns are valid. Low blood sugar is far more dangerous than high blood sugar.
Quite amusing how some people think doctors are always right.

Thank you,. Every test I've had have came back normal. So I don't understand how doctors allow me to continue taking medication?

No one has said anything about "doctors are always right." If she had low glucose, the medication would make it even lower so she would not have a normal test result. If you look at her posting history, this is an ongoing problem -- always second-guessing her health and anything her doctor says.

I have a right to second guess my doctor's IF I keep getting "Normal"reading's,but they want me to keep taking medication? This is my "Health/Life" I m talking about. If you have doubts about what your doctor says and don't question it? Your doing yourself a miss service. I had a feeling I had gallstones, the doctor said I didn't. I threatened to sue him if he was wrong. He tested me Guess What? I had gallstones. Doctors EGOS keep them from taking responsibility to do the Right thing.

I would suggest stopping your medication and then getting tested again with, if you can, with another doctor. And if that's turns out normal, then you will know that the first diagnoses was in error. That is the only way you are only going to really know. Taking diabetes medication is supposed to help you get a normal blood sugar test result.

The day of the test, I didn't take my medication

It doesn't work that way. A1C is a blood test that registers results for glucose levels for a three-month period. Which means stop taking the medication for a three-month period. I'm sorry, but it really appears that your doctors are getting really tired of you because YOU DON'T LISTEN to anyone except what's in your head. And that is not helping you. Anyone else responding to you anymore has got to get their own heads examined. You're all over the place in your explanations about your life. I think you need more help than anyone has given you so far.

FYI, I did blood test also, so I am aware. These are different doctors, I have a right to change them If i feel like they are Not providing me with the care I need. And the High premiums they charge. They don't like it, too BAD. Sounds like You don't care about your Health since your criticizingme for getting second or even 3rd opinions. Hundreds of people get misdiagnosed every year, lives have been saved when patients get other opinions. You could find yourself in my shoes???

This proves it. You just don't listen to what anyone says except what you want to hear. Blood test is what measures your AIC (three month level for a three month period.)
I actually said you could get another opinion. You don't seem to be able to really understand or remember what others are saying to you. And that's bad. And until you can and really understand that, you're going to be repeating your same problems as you have been over and over again and that will continue to be your life. Anyone else have the patience to post to you again, good on them. For myself, I'm done.

P.S. And then you're going to stop posting for a while until you figure that we here, new or old members are going to forget the problems you've written about and you can start over again. Sad.

It's not the nurse's or lab tech's job to a advise you what the test means or what to do about it. That's the sole area of the doctor. Having a normal reading while on medication to treat high blood sugar does NOT mean that you do not have diabetes. It just means that that particular reading was within normal limits.

I know doctors make mistakes. That's why I suggested you might want to get a second opinion from another DOCTOR. I also know what whatever happened to other members of your family doesn't have anything to do with what is happening to you.

I understand that, all I meant was that it is possible that i might have been misdiagnosed as did family members. The doctor herself had doubts that I had diabetes, which is why she had me retested? Yea the nurse shouldn't have discussed my results with me. I will be seeing a doctor Friday to discuss the results.

Everybody who HAS diabetes gets retested all the time. People who MIGHT have diabetes also get retested.

The lab tech only told you what your results were. That's not advice or interpretation. I get my blood testing results online, again, without interpretation. Your doctor will interpret the blood tests for your particular case, and tell you what you should do or not do about them.

There are two types of blood tests routinely administered: one is the standard fasting blood glucose test, which says what your blood glucose level is NOW; the other is the A1C, which gives an average over the last three months or so.
