Did anyone go to Saturday matinees in the 50's?

As a teenager in the 50's, I worked at our local movie theater on weekends. Part time ticket manager, and the rest of the time, making popcorn and custard cones. It was a fun job.

This was our local cinema when I was a kid and going to Saturday matinees in the 60's... ...long since closed...

We went to see a movie at the Raj Mandir in Jaipur, the largest single-screen theater in India. Outside, it looked like Godzilla's birthday cake, if Godzilla was a 12-year-old girl. Inside, it looked like Godzilla's wedding cake had exploded.

There were separate doors for women and men and some for both. Inside, you could sit in the women's section, the men's section, the family section and the couple's section (but you were warned to behave yourselves there).

Indians take their movie-going very seriously.

Hey Pecos, I shook hands with both Roy Rogers and Gene Autry when I was only 5 years old! They were both in Miles City, Mt for the Fourth of July parade and Wild Horse auction!
I saw them both at the Calgary Stampede parade .. didn't get to shake hands though. I was around 5 years old as well.

Absolutely. I met Annette Funicello at one of the matinees. I think it was the movie, "The Shaggy Dog" that was playing and she was on tour with the movie.

Remember, we had news reels, cartoons, previews of coming attractions, and between the movies we had an intermission where they showed pictures of popcorn and Coca-cola.
Yes,I WAS kicked out of a theater with my boyfriend because we couldn't stop kissing each other! This was later though, when i was 15.

My friends and I did. I fondly remember going to see monster and horror movies. To this day I sometimes feel the need to see a good Godzilla flick. LOL

Aunt Bea, that certainly is an impressive palace! Looks like a European tourist attraction.

I remember the Saturday matinees having serials, which were continuing stories always ending on a cliffhanger; come back next week to see what happens. TV series do the same thing now.
And the cliff hanger would change from what was previously shown and we would all boo .

I remember going to see a Vincent Price movie with friends when I was around 10 .. was so frightened, I hid behind the seats and we left early. Don't recall the title - just that I was really scared.

I used to walk up to the theater every Saturday afternoon with a pocket full of Morgan silver dollars, to watch Audie Murphy, Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh,or Jane Russell and Robert Mitchum. Jerry Lewis. I remember I HATED silver dollars because they were SO HEAVY! Couldn't leave them home because my brother would steal them.
I'd buy a Milky Way candy bar every Saturday for 15 cents,I think.
Anyone identify with this?
I'd love to have all those silver dollars now.

She was born and raised in Utica, NY. I worked with her Uncle Bob for several years delivering Millbrook bread.
Did you ever happen to see her husband before she died? I was shocked. I met her again years later while I was at United. I had the privilege of flying Annette from LA to Orlando with another lady who was her companion, but maybe she was also on staff. Annette was going to visit Disney World and to also to do a two or three day show with Frankie Avalon and a few other Hollywood types. She seemed like a very private type of a person, so I was surprised to see that her husband allowed a YouTube video of her to be made and shown.

To me, this video is shocking and I am still not in agreement with it. I would have preferred remembering her and her beautiful self as I knew her prior to her becoming ill. I disagree with her husband that she would have been OK allowing this video to be shown, but that's just my opinion.

I've seen this video before, as well as another video about Annette Funicello and her MS. Such an unforgiving disease. My eldest nephew's wife has MS and is doing well. She was diagnosed in her early 20's, but probably had it in her teens. She is now in her 40's and still working in the Health & Science field.

Apologies for going Off Topic ..

I knew a fellow down in Florida in his 70's that was still doing a good job of taking care of himself with the disease. I guess it just depends on how one is made.

Movies were expensive for my family. I think, as a kid, admission was either 35 , or 50 cents. I didn't see many Disney flicks, because they jacked up the price to 50, or 75 cents, which was expensive for my family.

Do you think Annette would have approved of this video? Originally, after I first saw it, I was upset that her husband allowed this to be shown. If I had to guess, I would say that money came into play.
