Did elevators, subway cars along with population density exacerbate the numbers in NYC?

Did things like the number and use of elevators and subway system in NYC help exacerbate the spread and virus numbers coming out of there? Population density leads to things like a lot of common use areas. Also wonder if NY having a lot of people in a cooler climate also helped make things worse. Areas of population density in California didn't get as hard as NYC-yet-is that because of a warmer or even sunnier climate? Might explain why several nursing homes getting hit hard, just like a cruise ship for the most part they're cooped up in the same environment with the same air and common areas.

Early on I saw a report that mentioned the subway/public transportation as being a major source of close contact and contamination for spreading the virus in NYC but I have not heard or seen anything since that mentioned it.

It seems to me that the density of the population in NYC would be a major factor.

I live in the center of the state and the numbers are quite low in my area and the surrounding rural counties.

It might be fewer people means less contact or the fact that we have limited public transportation so most people travel in private vehicles.
