Did I miss a conversation about Sunblock?

The Aveeno "Positively Radiant" isn't specifically a sunblock lotion, but it is a moisturizer that has (in one of the versions of it) SPF30 sunblocking. I use it all the time as a moisturizer (even when not planning to go outside), which makes it the best sunblock lotion for me because I'm willing to use it.

I can use most things…and have used something for about 40 years. Some people are allergic to some of the ingredients and give up. I find my favorites to be ā€œbaby facesā€ or neutrogena. You will probably need to experiment a bit . I like a lotion with a high SPF. I put it on my face in the am…and that is pretty much it.

From the Australian cancer association

ā€œWe recommend using any sunscreen that is labelled broad spectrum, water-resistant and SPF30 or above.

Interestingly, SPF50 offers only marginally better protection from UV radiation than SPF30 filtering out 98 per cent of UV radiation compared to 96.7 per cent blocked by SPF30.ā€

I find the SPF50 extra thick, so an unpleasant feeling. Iā€˜m going to back to a SPF 30. It’ll encourage me to renew it in the middle of the day.

My husband will use a moisturizer that has SPF 30. It doesn’t say anything about broad spectrum, though I don’t know what I should be looking for.

The only way sunscreen will work is if you USE it. Folks will take a swipe at themselves with the product and then wail afterward, "I PUT IT ON AND IT DIDN'T WORK!!!!"

I spent four years of my life selling and merchandising an extremely popular brand of suncare products and telling tourists, "I know you *never* burn up in Michigan at the lake but you're in Florida now and you're going to fry like a strip of bacon if you buy that SPF4 oil!"

Then I'd make them look at the wreck I made out of my arms by overtanning and not using sunscreen in my misbegotten youth. It would convince a few of them, but not enough. They were all determined to get a deep dark tan in four days at Daytona Beach. Instead, they'd go home looking like Louie the Boiled Lobster......

Never use less than 30SPF.

I have used Piz Buin SPF 30 for decades. I always make sure every year I have new bottles.. last month I used it, as always.. and got burnt on my face. Now I bought that on Amazon, and I may have got a dodgy fake... ....so this week now the sun and heat has returned I've been using The Nivea Sun SPF 30 Protect & dry Spray .. on my face ...as well as my body which is what I usually use it for places I can't reach. ..and it's been great...

I read this a couple of weeks ago. It seems that there are better sun protection products available in the EU and other parts of the world that aren't allowed to be sold in the US.

Part of the trick is consistency. As a woman it is easy to apply a lotion to my face every morning. I use sunscreen elsewhere if i am at the beach or somewhere similar.
I apply it on my face and arms before I take my morning walks.

I have a friend who has had bouts with skin cancer over that past several years. His dermatologist told him to only wear long sleeved shirts when out in the sun now. I'm starting to think that is not a bad idea. Most landscapers and construction workers wear them.

One of my doctors said years ago .. women should forget Moisturiser and just use Sun Lotion SPF all year round as a moisturiser and sun block , When I lived in very hot southern Spain for many years..I would take the shower in the morning. take a swim.. take another shower, then add the SPF all over.. it was a very quick routine altho; it doesn't sound it.. and I ultimately could do it every morning without thinking about it... and of course later in the day I'd often add more SPF

I have a high neck long sleeve swim shirt that I wear with my swimskirt that has built-in longer swim shorts whenever I'm going to the beach or anywhere I'm going to be out in the sun for hours.

People think that if they're under an umbrella at the beach, they're OK. News flash: they aren't. The sun bounces off the sand and they'll get burnt if they're out there long enough.

People think if it's overcast, they won't burn. Wrongo! They won't burn as quickly, but they WILL burn.

I've seen so many people wincing their way into a gift shop to buy burn gel and wailing, "but I NEVER burn!" Yes, maybe, but you're in Florida, bucko.....

That article mentions a Korean sunscreen, Beauty of Joseon. I ordered it from Amazon. It felt lovely. What I didn’t like was not being able to see clear labelling about it being an SPF. Then someone mentioned it didn’t look like the real thing. I use it along with my regular products. I won’t order it again, because I just don’t know if it’s real.

Agree with Jules about thin blouses, etc for not blocking the sun rays.

My husband wanted us to have short vacation after our first son was born.
His mother offered to take our son.

They decided to go boating & camp out.
We came back to a very red baby!

MIL said I covered his portable bed with an old curtain.
Thought he would be ok. :cry:

The worse sunburn I ever got was when I spent the day at Coronado Beach in San Diego. It was an overcast and somewhat cool day and I thought no problem. I ended up spending the next two days in my hotel room and when I got back I had to go see my doctor to treat the blisters.

For my son in the above post,,that was the begin of getting sun poisoning..

Could tell when he had too much sun, his lips would swell, have a fever.

Now that he doesn't live near by,, don't know how he manages his out door time & sunshine.

When we were on ATV trips together, long, sleeved shirts, pants, ball caps or helmets.

Both DH and I wear SPF50 sun shirts. It’s easier than gooping up my arms and chest. I had a special hat too that really covered my face well. Problem was it was so large that it looked like I was wearing a tent on my head. The one I have now isn’t quite as good coverage.
