Are you following the story? If not, scroll down to The Killings Of Paul and Maggie Murdaugh for an overview of this case. I had only heard bits and pieces of it on the news and online articles didn't fill in the gaps so I went to Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murdaugh_family
He and his wife were estranged and when he asked her to meet them at their lodge, she was skeptical about doing so and wanted to meet in a public place instead. She should have followed her first mind! She and Paul were shot with two different weapons, leading the defense to speculate there were two different shooters. Murdaugh is also accused of embezzlement and insurance fraud due to an attempted suicide scheme in which he hired someone to kill him so his remaining son could get the insurance money. It never ceases to amaze me how spouses choose murder over just letting go, divorcing or simply leaving and staying separated (although the latter can cause problems if a spouse racks up a lot of unpaid bills). So..do you think he did it?

Unless there is lots of evidence, they would not go to the expense of a trial.
Remember, a "Not Guilty" verdict doesn't mean a defendant is innocent. It means they were unable to convince all 12 members of a jury that he/she is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. And jurors have their own biases, whether they admit them or not. (remember the asinine "Not Guilty" verdicts in the first trial for the 4 officers who pounded on Rodney King). A different jury (with more functioning brain cells) found them guilty in the federal trial.
Our jury system is cheap, but not worth much.

Dateline did an episode on this called "Dark Waters." I watched it a second time, online, last week when I saw the trial had begun. Very interesting. The Murdaugh family ruled their small town and the law offices (they were all lawyers) for over a 100 years.

By all accounts the man himself was a real jerk, through his job as a prosecuting attorney he would win lawsuits for poor people, but then keep most of the money himself, lying to them about how much money was actually paid. He bullied people in general and controlled all the local politicians.

I have no trouble believing he killed his wife with the rifle, then probably took his son's shotgun off him somehow and killed him, too. We'll see if the jury thinks so.

The Court TV girls are delighted with this. They enjoy seeing a senior prosecutor himself on trial and how he uses his own expertise. They point out how he knows exactly when and how much to cry.

I watched a little of the trial on Court TV but apparently missed the parts that you have mentioned. I was undecided up to now, but if what you wrote is true, he looks to be guilty. The problem is however that the jury doesn't always get to hear the total story and must base their verdict upon what's presented in the trial.

Scheißt ein Bär in den Wald?

He's conned people for many years and robbed his family and friends and clients blind. Murdering his wife and son? Sure. Along with a couple of other "mysterious" deaths of people in his orbit. So far he's only charged with killing his wife and son.

I had to think about it a little but if Wald means woods, I got it.

This is happening in the state I live in (South Carolina) so we’re getting a lot of the trial coverage every day. Murdaugh is guilty of a lot of things but the prosecution may have trouble proving ’beyond a doubt’ on the murders. Also Murdaugh didn’t achieve all his nefarious doings without help and I’d like to see those individuals brought to justice as well.

OMG...I just realized I put this in the wrong category! 😱 Sometimes I wonder about me. Well there's another active thread on the subject anyway...where it's supposed to be.
