Did You Have Any Pets as a Child?

I had cocker spaniels growing up. As an adult, I've always had dogs except when we were in the army and stationed overseas and once when I was first out on my own, when I had two cats. I just never could warm up to the cats as much as dogs.

I don't remember a time when we did not have pets - as a child it was cats, dogs and rabbits.
Then with my children it was cats, dogs, guinea pigs, hamsters, even mice and a budgie.
To-day it is only me and my beloved tortoise shell cat Callie.

Dogs... We lived on a farm some miles from town. Seemed someone was always dumping a dog around our place. Some of them became very good house pets. Others... I think by dad or granddad put an end to them with a well placed bullet. And, we've seemed to always have dogs over the 50 years we've been married.
Cats... Had an overabundance of cats on the farm. None were pets. Feral cats who were tolerated simply because they helped keep mice and rats down around the barn and grain bins. Developed a severe hate for cats that has lingered even to today.
Fish... We now and then had goldfish in a fishbowl growing up. Had large goldfish in our cattle watering tanks. Tried a couple times to have fish when the kids were growing up. Way too much work to keep the tanks clean.
Growing up we had parakeets now and then. Don't remember them ever talking.

I grew up mostly with dogs, but we had cats also. My folks got me a guinea pig when I was 8-9 years old that we kept in the front room. When he was hungry, he'd let out some squeaky noises when he heard the refrigerator door open. (He knew there was lettuce in the frig.)

My first pet was a beagle named Toby. My Dad always thought dogs and cats belonged on a farm. I use to drag a stuffed cat along on a leash. I think he was embarrassed by it and finally took me to pick out my dog. He became so attached to that dog when it came time to put him down at the age of 15 my Dad cried like a baby as did the whole family. The dog put up with a lot from me but was so good patient and lovable.toby 1 resized.jpgtoby2 resized.jpgtoby3 resized.jpg

Yes, I've never been without a dog, since I was a kid.
This is me with my dog, Junior, when I was around 10.
We lived in the middle of a hardwood flooring plant, and I played with my dog and ran all around the stacks of planks for fun.
Our house did not have a bathroom, but we finally got electricity and heat put into it.

Maybe he was Sophie's great great great grandpa? Everybody has such wonderful pictures. Ruth, you reminded me of when I was little my mother had a Siamese cat. I used to wrap her up and tuck her in my doll crib. Needless to say I had kitty scratches through my whole childhood.

Ah, RuthIJ, exwisehe, love the pictures. :)

Yes, my family was very pet friendly, we had a variety of pets, but we were never without a dog, especially Shepherds.
