Diet now compared to in your youth

My goodness I was foolish in years past. I ate such rubbish and got away with it. I used to think a pot noodle and crisps was a good lunch. I had no regard for fruit and vegetables.

In my more mature times now, retired, I am completely different. I now think of the quality, quantity and timing of my meals. I mainly cook fresh meals, though I am no great cook but I like homemade. We do have the very odd takeaway.

So have you changed your diet with age?

Our hot school lunch cost 25 cents a day, so that's what our parents gave us. So my best friend and I would go to the grocery store across the street and use our quarters to by four candy bars and a Honey Bun each. Occasionally we'd pool our sources and buy a box of chocolate covered cherries. We were both skinny.

These days, I make healthy meals for my family every day. Salads, steamed veg, baked salmon, etc. We're all three fat.

I quite understand, despite healthy eating I am fatter than I would like. Could it be because I really do not like exercise....

In childhood we just burn up energy, I used to eat lots and stay slim.

I am happy to say I've never eaten a Pot Noodle in my life.... would never want to... but that's not to say I have a great diet. In fact since my husband's been gone this last 2 years my diet has been much worse.. because I only cook for myself...

Compared tho' with my childhood, my diet is 1000 times better

I guess being a poor farm kid had its advantages, I never developed bad eating habits since most of our food was farm fresh. Heck I never had a pizza until I was of driving age, same with fast food.

The biggest difference between my eating habits then and now is I hardly eat red meat anymore and my portion size is probably a quarter of what it use to be.

I'm lucky I've never had a weight problem so that has helped. My diet is miles healthier than it was when I was young because I have learned the value of healthy eating. I do "spot" gain weight but so far take care of it by exercise and that has worked pretty well.

I too never had pizza, or any kind of fast food until I was an adult.. Not because like @C50 we had good wholesome food, but because we had very little food.. there never was money for fast food.. in fact aside from fish and chips which we never had either.. we really had no idea fast food existed..

Actually neither did we. Our mum cooked fresh what we could afford. I never went to a restaurant until I grew up - it was a whole new world.

Extremely salty foods, near brine consistency. Loads of fats.

Upon our wedding, I eliminated salt from cooked meats. Made such a difference. Eliminated cholesterol, added garlic pills and fresh garlic. Cut out margarine which was the biggest culprit.

Cuts of beef, lamb and pork became much leaner over the decades. Nowadays, I'm back with low blood pressure problems but overall, changing the salts from table to rock and pink Himalayan salts made a huge difference.

Steaming veggies from fresh, with soft butters, so much tastier. Turkeys, roast beef and roast pork or chicken are now juicier. Steaks (required for iron deficiency anaemia) are so tender once pan fried without salt are now mouth melting.

Reducing butter, salt, fats. Changing to Sunflower and olive oils. Adding fresh herbs and spices. Taking a multivitamin with iodine, iron and selenium (the latter missing in Scottish soils). I've reduced my weight by nearly 3 stones.

Although, some favourite dishes were adjusted for all the ills and much more enjoyable diet for nearly 40 years. Happy!

I cook most of our foods using fresh or frozen veggies , and we’ve cut back considerably on the amount of meat we used to eat , as for myself I cut out 90% carbs way back in 2009 …that assisted me in loosing 26 kg in weight

I’ve never been a junk food eater ….but years ago…… being busy working it was easy to make a piece of toast for breakfast , sandwich for lunch , slice of bread with tea ( what Aussies call our evening meal ) that caused my weight to balloon to around to 90+ kg mark

We had lunch out yesterday to celebrate our 37th wedding anniversary, ( 2 nd marriage for both )
I had grilled chicken with a few chips ,salad / veg , hubs had a scotch fillet steak and a few chips with salad / veggies …we both had upset guts last night …...he had quite a large steak and the chicken i had was more than we usually eat along with a few chips 🍟 so we know better not to eat out ….or more than we are used to eating ….and not eat hot chips 🍟

I don't know if not having had them as a youngster..that I never rally got the taste for them. I like the occasional Chinese take out.. or a KFC maybe twice a year... but really FF doesn't excite me

I ate sporadically when I was younger. Many times, I just didn't have an appetite.
These days, we try to eat healthy, and make good choices when we eat out.

As a kid in a large family, I ate what my mother made and what she bought in food markets. She was a wonderful cook like many housewives of the 50s/60s era. At schools unlike the vast majority of other kids that ate meat sandwiches with sodas, I usual brown bag brought PBJ's with milk. As an adult I still don't eat much meat and try to vary my diet for what is healthy. Except on the road, rarely go to restaurants in order to avoid MSG. But do occasionally binge.

I grew up eating a Mediterranean Diet and my diet is still healthy, I cook from scratch and love real whole foods. My weight is controlled and maintained by eating a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, ample amounts of lean protein, and limited amounts of whole grains and starchy vegetables. I avoid fast food, preservative laden and artificially colored and flavored foods like the plague. Treats are limited but that doesn't mean I don't like them, I do, but I don't overdo it.
