Difficult time volunteering

I thought, now that I have my medical appointments caught up and my car has new tires, I'd like to go back volunteering for the senior meal delivery program. I sent an email to the person I last had contact with in the program. I got it back as undeliverable. Okay, I can call. Whomever I spoke with informed me that the person I attempted to contact is no longer working there. He said he'd give my phone number to the new director. That was an hour and a half ago. So far hasn't called me back.

What might be going on is what's the case around here: being in charge of volunteers is pretty much looked at as a "hot potato" that no one wants; they're given the extra work of being in charge of volunteers for no extra time or money and it gets put on a back burner. That's the case around here anyway; in fact, at one place, 1 of the volunteers told me that the applications they got from wannabe volunteers were just thrown in a drawer & they figured if someone wanted to volunteer enough, they'd call every day & keep bugging them 'till they got taken on.

Well, I'm not going to beg them since it's strictly volunteer. There's no compensation, even for gas. The only thing the volunteers get is a "recognition" luncheon once a year with door prizes. Since I started doing this in 2011, I've never won a prize at these functions. Seems the same people win every year. I only did it to get out of the house and run my car so neither of us gets too rusty.

I'm sure you will be called! Our 'Meals on Wheels' programs here in Cali are always looking for new volunteers!

Well, after waiting 4 hours, I DID call again only to be told the director was out of the office and would call me when he got back. I guess, like Charlie on the MTA, he never returned.
