Dining out or dining in?

I've never been a big fan of dining out. My kids are always inviting me to eat somewhere & I usually turn that down. There are several factors that make me enjoy eating at home more. I like to know my food is fresh. I like to know my food is clean. I can't tell you how many times I take one bite of a restaurant salad & I know they didn't wash the lettuce properly. And there are some things I like served really hot. Especially breakfast when I'm eating my brain tabulates how much cheaper I could have just made that myself and how much better it would have tasted. I would so much rather be invited to someone's home for dinner. It's more relaxing. You can talk freely, don't have to worry about being loud or noisy. I think I frustrate my kids with this sometimes & they say things like " You never want to go out. Why don't you want to go out ?"

So, how do you feel about it?

Dine in? Dine out?

I love eating out. At home it's hard to get my hubby to eat out unless we've gone into the city. He says there's no reason to eat out locally as the food he cooks is better.

Now, in Thailand we ate lunch and dinner out for the entire 3 months. Cheap and good. Why cook?

Maybe I should have married him...

My husband 'cooked' every time I had a new baby. He would make me a couple of sandwiches and drop them off in the bedroom with a large jug of juice before going to work :D When I came home from the hospital with the baby in my arms he was very proud of himself he said " Look I vacuumed !" I freaked out later when I opened the oven & it was full of dirty dishes LOL

I prefer eating at home but I also dislike cooking so I don't mind going out occasionally. I'm not lucky enough to have a chef for a husband like Ameriscot is. So jealous of you for that!

Always, always eat in. Just don't like eating with a bunch of strangers in a restaurant watching you and what you are eating.

Haha! That would have been my first husband. This one is a good cook and enjoys being creative. I however do all the clean up. No complaints.

When I cook, I cook for one, and when you cook for one you don't always buy fresh. There's a lot of broccoli florets and boneless chicken strips in my freezer, and a big bag of rice (long grain) and a box of stale pasta in my cupboard.

But within three miles of my place is a little mom-and-pop diner. The mom half cooks a mean breakfast clear up until 4pm. and her son makes an awesome burger. I eat there at least four days a week, mostly for dinner (usually either ham or roast beef) but sometimes twice in a day. I figure the food they use is at least as good as my freezer chicken, factory processed, flash-frozen and then shipped from I don't know where. They know what I like and the waitresses flirt (there's a redundancy in that sentence).

Also there's this nice Romanian lady in my complex who brings me a dinner once in a while. If I'm not here she leaves it at my door all divvied up in plastic containers. She does this because I refinished some furniture for her and fix things in her house when she asks me to, plus she's afraid I'll get skinny because I'm not married.

Where in Thailand where you? I spent a while in Chiang Mai. I didn't think I'd like the food but it was good.

We were in Koh Samui Dec-Feb this winter. We had 5 or 6 favourite restaurants. Very healthy, delicious, with so many choices! And cheap! We will go back again next winter for 3 months again. We rent a house.

Funny thing.. my ex husband owns all the houses on this one block where he lives, so 2 of my daughters live in 2 of the houses right next to him. Every time he knows they are coming to see him he asks them" What's she cooking? Get me a lot of it in plastic containers and bring it to my work." They said he sits around and says stuff like " I used to have the most delicious things to eat. Such nice things every day. Now all I get is crap." My daughter that cooks really well offers to cook for him and he says " It's not the same. Yours is not the same." My oldest daughter told him " Gosh dad it's like you are cheating on your wife with food! Stop asking me to bring you Mom's food . I feel so guilty after I do it. " LOL

I stayed at a place called Gaps House. Pretty country. They had a 2 or 3 day festival while I was there where ladies wore these big colorful skirts and everyone put flowers and candles in the river, with lots of music and a long drawn-out ceremony. Met some interesting folks there from all over.

I love the culture. I love the way everyone greets each other with putting your hands together and a slight bow of the head. I love all the temples as well.

This was our second winter there and this time we got to know some of our neighbours. One Canadian couple spend 4 months in Thailand every winter, part of the time in Chaing Mai but I don't remember where.

I didn't go to any of the islands. Maybe next time. The people are very nice and very accommodating. Always saw to it I found my way around ok and got what I needed.

They are very nice people. I'd like to see some of the mainland. I briefly saw Bangkok but I'd like to see the countryside. Not sure I can talk husband into it.

The island we stay on does have some very touristy areas but we stay in a quiet area and only go into the busy areas to shop or visit temples.

I don't think eating out these days is what it used to be....too expensive and many times not as good as you can make at home. I do think that our childrens' generation sees eating out as more convenient...just a difference in attitude. That being said, there is something to be said for "getting out of the house". I view it many times as entertainment. I do think BlunderWoman you should accept more invitations from the kids as I think it is their way of including you in their lives and they look at it as a gift to you...just my humble opinion:playful:

When we go into the city - Glasgow - we usually eat at a chain pub/restaurant. They have a big selection of ales and beers and decent, but not gourmet food. Good prices.

Thailand, of course, was a whole different thing. Some meals were about $3 each - huge bowls of curry, plate of rice.

If I was younger maybe I would move there, so long as there was plenty of AC for the heat...

Yeah they are trying to be nice. Sometimes I go just for that reason..but I'd rather stay home. I see a lot of my kids. I'm a very fortunate woman in that way. I saw one just yesterday she came with her husband. I have 2 son in laws that are just like sons. I was also blessed that way. Yesterday my son in law came with bags and bags and bags of groceries. He said "Just wanted to save you some grocery shopping." It was such a very sweet and thoughtful thing to do. I do go watch my grandson's soccer games & other stuff. We're pretty close knit family. My favorite son in law lives in California though. I love that kid. He's such a neat guy. He calls me up on the phone maybe once every two weeks to blab. I don't tell anyone I have a favorite son in law though..it's a secret.

Lots of people retire there. Shops and malls all AC. Our house had good AC - cooled it off within 10 minutes. Good medical care as well.
