Disappearance of the Millbrook Twins

Not really "current" but I did not feel this was appropriate for the entertainment section here. I just finished watching a documentary about the 1990 disappearance of 15 year old twins Dannette and Jeannette Millbrook from Augusta Georgia. They had walked to a small gas station near home and were never seen again after they left. When the mom called the police, she was as much as told that "they probably ran away" and that was it.
The documentary makers were looking into why so little was done about the case. Why were leads not followed? Why did police not follow up. They interviewed the cop who told mom the kids were runaway (off camera) and he pretty much blew it off saying he "knew" the girls were trouble (they were not) and said he was in contact with the mom regularly (again false). When confronted with fact that the mom disputed that he called her "uneducated, so she probably did not remember". Add poor and black to that.
The documentary makers did find some leads, interviewed a man who said he thought he knew someone who was involved. They gave all this info to the current Sheriff. At the end of the program, there was a thing that said that the current Sheriff has decided NOT to follow up on any of the info the people gave him. SMH STORY

A lot of things have changed for the better in the South. Some things will never change for the better in the South, especially in rural areas.

I meant to watch that documentary and forgot so I guess I need to keep my eyes peeled for a rerun.

I don't remember hearing about this case. This type of thing is still going on. It's noticeable that when a White girl or woman disappears it becomes a major news story. Not so with Black women and children, although there have been a couple of exceptions. So many children of color have gone missing that we never even hear about and are not properly followed up probably for the excuses those sheriff's officers gave and yes...being Black (even if not poor). It's so sad and disgraceful.

Don't want to take this thread too far off the intended topic but........

I watched a special on TV just a few years back about missing persons. The list [in number] is beyond belief. And in most cases the cause is absolutely unknown. The program hinted that many/most just walk off....? Likely not so in the case of kids though.

I followed this case for awhile back in the 90's. The Sheriff is a nincompoop. The case does not end when the child would have turned 18, if foul play was suspected as it should have been in this case.

What should have transpired back at that time was that the GBI or the FBI should have been contacted and the case turned over to them. Once again, a lot of mistakes were made early in the case, which caused several of those mistakes to happen.

My guess as to why the girls made several inquiries of their relatives to walk with them was because they had reason to believe that they were being pursued or stalked.
