Discrimination?

Whether you are in favor of Obamacare or not, the fact that one can get insurance even though they have a pre-existing condition, is a blessing. However, how can this apply to all but Seniors? I just tried to get a new Medicare Supplement and was turned down because I have been advised to have Carpal Tunnel Release surgery!

I personally think it is discriminatory to turn Seniors down for insurance due to pre-existing conditions and not the general population! What do ya all think?

Really?? Hmmm; best look into this; maybe this is why my dr was so insistent on me having a surgical procedure I wasn't sure I wanted to deal with.... Maybe it depends on the condition, or how serious it could be??
I know carpal tunnel can be horribly painful; hard to think they'd turn you down because of that.

Right hand was "horribly painful" at times...had that surgery several years ago. Left hand...not as bad, but can't crochet, hold a book/ipad for any length of time or it causes me a lot of pain/discomfort at night.

But yep, I have the denial letter laying right next to me as I type..."We have completed our review of your request for insurance and we regret to inform you we are unable to consider you for coverage based on our Underwriting Guidelines. Out decision is based on review of the information regarding your medical history of advised surgery (carpal tunnel), obtained from the phone interview." Yep...denied because of carpal tunnel! Ain't life grand!

Rose, where you trying to change to a different Medicare Supplement policy? Because when you sign up initially, your first time, they don't ask any medical questions. We are going through the process right now, getting my husband signed up.
From what I understand, which isn't much right now, there doesn't seem to be any problems, but switching to another plan is not as easy from what I have read, which really makes no sense.

Yes Old Hipster, I was trying to change supplements. The cost of my DH's supplement has risen so dramatically since he took it out and now mine has made a sizable jump in cost too, so when this company called and said they were now offering supplemental insurance in Indiana, I thought it was worth a try. Disqualified for suggested carpal tunnel surgery...no surgery even scheduled...but they turned me down. Why if "the rest of humanity" cannot be turned down for prior conditions why should Seniors be? I know we are "sicker", but to me it is still a type of discrimination. Good luck on finding a suitable supplement for your DH...be sure to look at their track record of increases, although with all the people that will be flooding into the health insurance arean, I am not sure history means anything at this point. Thanks for your response!

This pre-existing condition is one reason we need a single pay national health insurance. Insurance companies can pick and choose who they insure and offer coverage. They should not be involved or realize a profit because I become I'll.
