Dizziness, ringing and a muffled volume in one ear

I already have a low case of vertigo but 4 days ago when I woke up then sat up a big
wave of dizziness hit me and I actually fell back on the bed. If I bend over from waist to
pick something up I now have to hang onto a wall or furniture near by to not fall or stumble,
I have had ringing in my ear for quite a time but this muffled feeling like you get when water is
trapped has begun. I have been still getting dizzy when I go to rise up from my bed each day now.
I am thinking it is fluid trapped behind my ear drum or something.
Anyone else experience this? What happened, what was it?

Yes, it sounds like vertigo which I had some episodes few
yrs back...after visit to doc, I learned on my u-tube to use
a certain set of head manuevers to overcome the problem....
if you search vertigo on u tube you should find it....sorry I
cannot recall the title of it rightr now,,,best luck to you...

sounds like you've got a middle ear infection, best to see the doctor, probably can be easily fixed... hope you feel better soon...

Have you had any nausea or vomiting when the other symptoms were present? Sounds like inner ear to me and an endolymph fluid surge. Under any stress lately? Any signs of virus?

Allergies can trigger mucus and swelling in the ear canal, making it seem "full." If by chance it is a seasonal allergy, you could try an OTC antihistamine first. It won't compound an infection, but at the same time, an antihistamine won't cure an infection. That will require an antibiotic. If the doctor cannot see you right away, ask his medical assistant if it's okay to try an antihistamine.

If you drop something, it would be better to leave it there, or if it must be picked up, squat to do so (providing your joints allow that) rather than bending over to pick it up. I'm not having ear trouble at this time, but I wouldn't bend over from a standing position to pick up anything I dropped.

@IrishEyes Please do not DRIVE until you get this controlled and go without symptoms for at least 2 weeks.

What you describe with the tinnitus first, then later hearing loss, ear pressure, and dizziness (vertigo), is consistent with fall allergy related problems that inflame the sinuses and aggravate the inner ear endolymph fluid, causing surges that cause mixing of inner ear sodium and potassium, that results in vertigo.

I think it does warrant having a dr or other medical professional, actually look at it, to see what it needs.
It could be a few different things, all of which are addressed best, and easiest for you, if it's sooner.

This is what I was referenccing. used this method for me and
the wife and it helped tremendously....there are several
you-tube vid's on the "epley manuver" for vertigo, dizzyness...
Check it out......don

Yes, effective for dislodging crystals out of the semicircular canal. Since Irisheyes has pressure in her ears that came after having tinnitus, that isn't consistent with an onset of positional vertigo. Her vertigo seems to come with sudden head movements, which is common with an over extended endolymph sac and inner ear ion mixing.

Until any endolymphatic sac extension is ruled out, the maneuver you suggest can rupture the already extended sac and cause a serious and permanent situation referred to as Meniere's disease. While many have had great success with such maneuvers, it shouldn't be done without first seeing a highly experienced ENT and ruling out more serious inner ear problems. It can also cause a perilymph fistula and turn a bad situation into hell.

While I understand the knee jerk safe advice to call or visit a physician…I totally agree that vertigo can be caused by seasonal allergies. When I get vertigo I use Sudafed. Works beautifully for me.
I just completed a series of steroid treatments for same symptoms as Irish. I can't use other allergy meds because of glaucoma. The thing is that trying an allergy med is what most docs will recommend if they see sinus irritation. If the symptoms persist, they usually consider that a virus is in play. My husband took allergy meds for similar symptoms as mine and Irish, and cleared up the symptoms of hearing loss, ear fullness, and dizziness. The allergy meds did cause him some prostate issues, but that seems to be getting better now that he is off the allergy med.

The other possibility is low blood pressure. Monitor yours if you have one of those home monitors, and make sure it's as normal.

This is the first thing that came to my mind too.

Knee jerk? They're the professionals, and at our age we need to stay on top of things.

@VaughanJB …I did not mean to offend…but where I am if I called today it would take me three weeks to see a physician. Or you can go to the ER.
You don't have a urgent care clinic? They are great for things like this that don't require the ER, but are more urgent than waiting 3 weeks to see your PCP. Our urgent care clinic usually have a shorter wait time than the ER.

What you are describing is BPPV, Benign Paroxymal Positional Vertigo which is different from other forms of vertigo in that those maneuvers work well to manage it. I had to do them every year or so for over a decade. But haven't needed them in the 2 years since i started sleeping sitting up. I got it most often when rolling over in bed.

The manuevers didn't help me with the dizziness that can come from a person with low blood pressure standing up too quickly, a problem i had from puberty till in my 50's. With that kind i never lost consciousness and learned to simply freeze, touching a wall or piece of furniture till it passed. i'd know it passed because my vision would seem to close circularly like an old fashioned camera shutter then reopen instantly. Haven't had that in years.

Without going into details, I had a malady just this week. It wasn't anything life threatening (thank goodness), but I knew I needed to see a Doctor. So I contacted my local GP online and was surprised to be given an appointment same day, within two hours!

The NHS gets a lot of criticism, but the service I got was wonderful. Ordinarily three weeks out is not unusual for me.
