Do any of you remember and like the big band sound?

The big band was mentioned in another thread and brought back memories of my oldest sister and her boyfriend and future husband used to listen and dance to Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw...
 
Yes Ralphy, absolutely.
My Grandmother :sentimental: used to play all of that music to me when I was in my cot! ;)
Of course that stayed with me, and I love it. If my better half and I get the chance to go and dance and listen to big band,

then bring it on. And if this song gets played, then we are up dancing and jiving to it!

 
That's the stuff! My sister had 78 albums loaded with big band recordings. She loved dancing and tried to teach me but I was a hopeless cause...
 
Yes, I do remember the BB sound. My mom would play her 78's all the time while we were growing up. My favorite was Glenn Miller and the song was "In the Mood."
 
Remember my mom playing BB records and dancing with me and my brother. I liked it. But here's a more recent version of the sound...


I have this CD. Also I have two Cab Calloway CDs.
 
That music was from my fathers youth, but I like some it. It looks like it would have been a lot of fun to dance to while YOUNG.
 
Of course I remember. Those days were the age of REAL music; They actually played real notes and could
read music. They played all kinds of songs from swing to ballads.

Today's "musicians" use only guitars and drums and I doubt if any of them can actually read music.

And, have you noticed that it's always LOUD (ear splitting) ! "If you can't play good.....play LOUD."

You asked and these are my thoughts.

Oh, and BTW; due to this LOUD music, many young people are developing hearing problems.
The Navy is having trouble finding good Sonar operators.

I've noticed, when I watch music videos, that many band members wear musician's earplugs. A large number of Rock musicians in particular, suffer from Tinnitus. One actor who has spoken publicly about his Tinnitus is William Shatner.
 
I LOVE the Big Band era, I was happy when they had the swing revival too. I took a dance class with my middle daughter. Turned out I had two left feet but she did excellent! Two favorites from each period...
 
todays so called 'singers' are not singers. They really get my hackles up. they have to shout and have the mike almost rammed down their throat. They have a habit of repeating the same few words over and over again and I can never hear a word they are mouthing, Unlike the days of Sinatra, Bennett, Como etc; Every song had a meaning and every word they sang could be understood.
But to me the finest orchestra in the world is not performed by humans but by birds. The Dawn Chorus is the most beautiful sound you will ever hear.

You are right, Falcon. A lot of today's music is electronically produced and/or enhanced. Computers generate much of the music, so the bands really do not have much left to do. As for reading music, I seriously doubt if a lot of the backup music is live.
 
When I first started work the "Old Boys" all moaned about modern music, then the Beetles as it was repetitive and boring. Can anything I asked at the time be more repetitive, basic and boring as the horrible noise below. More to the point I suspect they had music written for them by song writers at that point in time.

A great version of the old chestnut Frenesi is Linda Ronstadt's version sung in Spanish...
 
I have Apple TV and buy my music from the iTunes store for about a buck a pop. I make my own playlist without having to buy the album. This new tech is fantastic and makes life very enjoyable as I decline and recline in my recliner, and suck up martinis and sounds...
 
I grew up listening to Glenn Miller, Guy Lombardo, Rudy Vallee, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Ray Noble, The Coon Sanders Nighthawks and other orchestras. And watching Lawrence Welk. In high school I dated a saxophonist in a band called The Moonlighters. They played mostly Glenn Miller songs.
