Do bugs bother you in the warmer months?

The Australian mosquitoes (mozzies) loved me. I had an allergic reaction to them, and
had to go to the E.R.

My late mother-in-law told me to use Avon's "Skin So Soft". It's slightly oily - but, it
worked. I was at an outdoor evening summer event, and .. not one bite!

mosquitos dont bother me-but i heard a dab of vicks or pepperment oil will stop them---also wearing white clothes --mosquitos cant see white

I usually stay out of our forest in late Spring, and Summer....due to all the ticks and chiggers. If I do venture there, I spray my arms with Deet repellant, and spray my pant legs and boots with some insecticide. Until we get the first Hard Freeze in the Fall, the bugs are all over the place. Here's a "Tip" if you get a tick on you....put a drop of liquid hand soap on the tic, and wait a few seconds until it begins to move, at which point you can then safely flick it off or squash it. Trying to pull it off with your fingers or a tweezer can cause the tick to "puke" its poison into your skin, and increase the odds of getting Lyme Disease.

I live in the middle of chiggers and ticks with some wasps thrown in for good measure. Summer is not my favorite time of the year to be outside. Deet saves the day when I do yard work.

Thanks, Don. About ticks... I've never had one bore into me, but people I know have. One or two have suffered with Lyme disease. So the Deet will repel them? And what about other mosquito repellents now on the market?

House flies, late summer
Pesky
A little slower than earlier in the year
But fast enough to just get away when swatted at

They'll land on my arm
I'll smack my arm
It'll just get away

It's a little game they play this time if year, of 'what'r you hittin' yerself for?'

If they land on my leg, I can sneak up behind 'em and clap my hands
But then, there's the fly guts

We have had our share of wasps here in Ms this year, I mean swarms of them .They get under the eaves of your house or where the roof extends over your front/back door just any place they can build their nests, thank goodness for the spray that shoots out 20 feet and kill them instantly. They have all but died out with cooler weather. I hope they are gone for this season.

There are several repellents which May keep ticks away....but the best ones are those which contain 40% DEET. I use a brand named Repel.

oh yes we have them all in Ms too, fire ants come up after rains really fast, we are constanly treating fire ant mounds but this year was not too bad, I guess the heat and drought kept them at bay.

They used to drive me nuts but now before I go out I spray myself with 100% undiluted apple cider vinegar and ALL bugs leave me alone, even those big huge flies that take chunks from the skin. I use it on my dogs also but make sure to cover their eyes. The vinegar does smell a bit at first but dissipates as time goes on but I don’t mind the smell.

I save small little spray bottles for this very purpose and stick one in my little 5 x 7 shoulder strap purse in the bug annoying seasons. It’s like magic.

I use Bragg apple cider vinegar with the mother in it. Even horse owners I’ve known add some to the water their horses drink which decreases the amount of flies around them.

If you have a problem with fruit flies, put out a dish of water with some of this in it and they will all go to the dish and drown. We don’t have that problem but some people do and it works perfectly.

I swear by Apple Cider vinegar for a lot of things, only reading the other day if you add Apple Cider Vinegar and a tablespoon of Epsom Salts to a bottle, shake it up and spray all the weeds on your footpath, they should be dead by the next day.

For killing weeds I’d just just regular salt and plain white or clear vinegar. No sense spending extra money on epsom salts and ACV. That’s expensive stuff to kill weeds.
It’s best if you do it on a very sunny day and don’t forget to rinse whatever device you are using out so it doesn’t corrode it.
It does work really well. I add a few stops of dish liquid but I use a fairly big spray container.

Here in the High desert mosquitoes are rare to non-existent. But we have scorpions that you don't want to step on barefoot, on the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
We had an experience close to that years ago, on a Greek island. In the middle of the night, I had to leave my room to go to the restroom and I saw something scurrying on the floor. It took me a moment to figure out it was a scorpion! So I bolted back to my room and placed a towel underneath the door. Didn't see it again. Another time, on that same island (back in the 1980s) there was one sitting on top of my cousin's stovetop when I was visiting her for lunch. She screamed and lashed at it with her large spoon and it flew across the room and scurried out the door. Almost gave me a heart attack!

Mosquitos love me, but if I'm outside for any length of time in the shade or at night, Buzz Away is my go-to repellent. It's plant-based and non-toxic. When I'm in the garden, it's usually hot, and I'm a bit sweaty from working, so those pesky little gnat-like things are always buzzing around my face. I remedy that by spraying my hat!
