Do Senior Forums & Organizations Make You Feel Old?

Have you seen the movie in which when you reach the old age of thirty, you're entertainingly killed in a carnival atmosphere?

How can I "feel" old? I am old. I'm 74. Being old means that one has lived a certain amount of time, and has endured some processes of aging. The last time I looked, I was still breathing. While it is true that Senior Forums doesn't have many 13 year old members. Its age group is cemented, not by a number of years lived, but by common factors facing the members. It's a kin to saying that a group of pizza lovers bond together, so they turn into pizzas. You can use all the euphemisms there are, but all humans follow a prescribed life span according to time lived. Can't do nothin' bout that. I don't think teens join the latest internet social media, because it'll remake them into teens. They are teens wanting to be with other teens. We are seniors wanting to be with other seniors., We were "old" before we joined.

I am what I am: 74 years old. Being on this form or not being here doesn't make me feel younger & it doesn't make me feel older. You get old because you have no more dreams, you stop exercising or going for walks. You shuffle like an old person, sit watching the idiot box all day, grumble about your health, the government and everything else. You often become old & you become boring because of your attitude. Those with major health issues are, of course, excused but not the rest! We need to keep reading for fresh issues to keep our brains sharp. We need to have friends that provide us with stimulating conversation. We need to see the inspirational & beautiful things in this world & forget the negative things out there in the media which are guaranteed to make us miserable. As they say, "keep on truckin'.

I don't feel any older or younger by participating here but I do get a sense that I'm very different from most other people my age. Then again I'd already noticed that from real life encounters with people in my age range. However I don't get around too many people in my age range, so I was thinking it just might be the people I run into, but this forum has confirmed what I've noticed elsewhere.

Since the majority of people on these forums are quite a bit younger than I, yes I do. I was born at the height of and lived through the remainder of the Great Depression, WWII, and so on. Some of you have suffered harsher experiences than I will ever know personally, my profession has led to see so much. But I've seen many good times and experience one of the sweetest fun eras of the 20th century. That was the period between 1945 and 1950. The war was over and service men were returning home. The music was the very best; swing from big bands and sweet jazz. I entered my teen years taking it all in with gusto and enjoyed every second of it. Of course I had the usual teen age angst when it came to authority, etc, but I doubt we'll ever see a time like that again. It was indeed the very best of times.

Not in a bad way though. :)

I am cognizant of my age, but when I am in the company of seniors both here and in person, I start thinking I'm old. I don't feel old so what causes this incongruity?
I know I'm old, late 60s, but in my mind I'm much younger. I'm in the company of people my age and younger in everyday life, and seniors here on this forum. None of those interactions make me feel any older or younger than I am. I'm very comfortable communicating with people in my age group, we have many things in common to be sure. Probably just what attitude you have, a positive one is best. :)

Not old at all, Sea, you have 60 more to go, and then you'll be old. :)

I'm with Wren, on this.

When I compare myself to others my age, there is no comparison. I may have been born into a family that was poor and didn't have much, but I sure made up for it in spades as far as being gifted with good genetics and youthfulness.

It's a privilege growing old. So many aren't afforded the opportunity, and at 57, I feel nowhere near old, but being able to age in style, there is no better feeling.

Inside, I'm still a kid, outside, I'm in my 40's, and when I'm around others who are a mix of age, I feel younger than all.
You are not old at all, my son is 57, and I am ..... Like 34 or thereabouts. At least in my head!

The only senior citizens I see, are those I hear and see on T V--I'm home bound with full body fairly severe Essential Tremor shaking head to toe--so I have no contact with persons in person who are, say, around my age (84), -- how they act or look or feel? All I know is that in appearance in my face and body I've grown sooo different and yucky. :) I think it's because of listening only/mostly to my children's younger thinking and interests that I don't have "old" person thinking. Even physical problems I've been temporarily struck with I've not seen as due to my age. During a check up I recently had, a doctor told me that "because of my age" I had to be extra careful to avoid catching covid. And I thought facetiously, Whatd'ya mean people my age?! Are you saying I'm OLD! lol
What is Essential Tremor?

"Logan's Run" with a young Michael York playing Logan, a guy known as a Sandman, who are the guys who kill runners. But then he gets to 30 and HE runs. I didn't like that hypocrit one bit.

I can't relate to todays young people at all...their lifestyles and attitudes don't remind me of my youth. In fact I feel very glad that I grew up in the 60s. As others have said, participating on this forum doesn't make me feel old. It's one of the very few forums where you get normal conversation. People on other sites seem to have a need to prove something. Here, everyone behaves naturally and you do get a sense of a persons true personality.
