Do some parents set unrealistic expectations?

I and my brothers were guided to attend university. But then, none of us really wanted to pursue anything else. We wanted to go to university - degrees in medicine and education respectively. My maternal grandparents who escaped Poland during WW2 worked on farms in Poland and in Quebec, in factories. My grandparents wanted the following generations to have opportunities that they did not.

My parents also went to university - education and accounting. I don't have children but I would have guided them towards a profession or a trade that paid well and or entitled them to jobs with benefits and pensions. I would not say to any child that you can be whatever you want to be. That is ridiculous! How about if my child wanted to be a singer and could not hold a note.
