Out shopping yesterday I bought a couple of small items in the chemists, paid with a £20.00 note and luckily, noticed the assistant gave me change for £10.00 ! the same thing happened last week I was short changed by £5.00 so, if I’d not had my wits about me I would’ve been down £15.00 in a week !

Do you always check your change ?

I try to remember.

It does annoy me that people in shops are not trained to count your change back to you when you complete a transaction.

They should start with the total on the register/receipt and count your change back to you until they reach the amount of money given to them.

It provides a quick check and balance to all involved.

I rarely pay by anything but my debit card, which is just as well as a baby could do better than me where arithmetic is concerned.

I check the change if I pay cash.

Years ago, I used to help out at a school where my wife worked - helping the children (7-8 years old) with the "3 R's". One girl was great with money. You could take a handful of change, set it down and she could instantly tell you the total.

Apparently her mum would take her shopping and showed her how to check the change she was given. A jolly useful skill.

I usually pay with the smallest bill possible if paying cash as employees at someplace like a fast food outlet can appear overwhelmed by a larger bill and give you change as if you'd provided a smaller one. I'll count bills I'm due as change due to bad experiences but will just throw coins in my pocket...

I don't know if the people where you shop Wren are
forgetful or learning or "Sticky Fingered", but maybe
it is time to use a card when shopping. Remember the
till tells them how much change to give.

Mike.
Good idea, thanks Mike I was thinking along the same lines ;)

yes, I pay with cash quite often, especially in places where there is possibility of scanners (gas stations stand along ATMs) or places where they take your card out of your sight (restaurants). One of my friend's husbands worked in the fraud department of a large bank, and he recommended these two tips.

If they do not count the change as they turn it back (instead of just handing me a wad of money), I'll stand there and count it in front of them. In a few instances, I've received too little change, but I've also had people give me too much change which I promptly give back.

ALWAYS..... I'm also one to give oddball moneys... Example.... Total is 12.37 hand them a $20, Then follow up with 3 Ones... Love the stupid lost look on about half the faces.... Ill even do the same thing with coins... And always figure in my head the change coming back....

Good advice. Thanks!

Nope! I went completely cash free a few years ago. I was collecting vast quantities of change that I couldn't get rid of. Banks no longer took rolled up change, and they didn't have public change machines. And I wasn't going to use those supermarket change machines, which had a 15% fee. So I went completely cash less. Haven't had any problems since then.

Always count it. Too many times in tourist area's, there has been attempts to shortchange me. Guess they figure out of towner's an easy mark. Perfect example, If you are ever in Quartzsite AZ. and use the dollar general there, keep a close eye on your change. I've been there multiple times and every time there has been an attempt to short change me. EVERY TIME. That can't be a coincidence.:mad:

My bank takes rolled quarters
Once my glass beer stein is full, it's around $100
Nickels, dimes, pennies go into a fish bowl....once filled, that too yields around $100 after the change machine has their way with it

Actually, I find great fascination with those coin gobblers
(we talk to each other)

Then again, I can watch the floppy air guys for days

I stopped using cash because you can’t get rid of the change, i use to save pennies then roll them n take them to the bank, not anymore the banks won’t take them! They won’t take the silver either!!😡

What's the names of thease banks, who take change- rolled up or not? Around here, none of the banks do. You used to be able to deposit checks into your acct, even if your acct. was in another bank. There's only one bank around here that does that anymore.

Never these days- but on occasions before tills became automated I was given too much change.I scarpered being totally decent and honest.
