Do you drop off goods to Goodwill? Do you take more than you give?

The small town near me has a thrift store, from which all profits (after rent, utilities, etc.) go to the local no-kill animal shelter. All workers are volunteers. One of my dogs is from that shelter so I donate everything to that store and shop there, also. They have a donation jar on the thrift store counter and I will usually drop a few bucks into it, too. The shelter is spotless and the animals are well treated/housed; I am happy to help support that facility.

I will point out that Value Village in both the USA and Canada, is a For Profit Corporation, whose stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange, and has a value of over a Billion Dollars. It is NOT a charity.

I donate to goodwill and value village often. Last night we just came back from purging my in-laws house. My mother in law had died and my father was moving into my sister in laws house so we volunteered to help. We sold some stuff, kept some stuff, threw away some stuff and gave away dozens of stuff to local charities. We gave away dozens of boxes and garbage bags full of stuff. We also discovered that if the bin accepting charities is full, overflow that’s left outside the charity cannot be accepted. Unfortunately it gets left for garabage. Not many people know this and loads of donations get thrown out unexpectedly.

We donated, clothes, purses, shoes, chrystal , books, Christmas ornaments, dishes; 2 garage bags full of pet dogs. Basically a house full of stuff. It took us 2 full weeks of purging. We sold some of the furniture but the rest got thrown out. We threw away as much stuff that was given away. It seemed like such a waste. Then again, about 36 garbage bags of full of stuff was donated.

Through the years I have given a ton of stuff to thrift stores. I have cleaned out my share of houses. When I downsized from my house to a small condo much was taken to thrift stores. I can’t buy anything unless I want to get rid of something. I don’t want to clutter my space.

We have no thrift stores here called Goodwill... but we have a whole raft of Charity shops in this country ...

There's 4 in my nearby town.. and plenty more in towns further afield, including Cancer research.. British heart foundation..Keech Hospice..Isabel Hospice... Salvation Army... Willow foundation... Help the Aged.. St Elizabeth hospice, loads more... ,... We even have a Charity Warehouse not far away...

I take donations every few weeks..large donations... I rarely ever buy from a Charity shop.... but I used to a lot at one time.. but now that the country is in recession people just donate junk ( not me..) so nothing is worth buying.,except my stuff..lol
