Do you ever buy second hand items?

Over the years my wife and I have bought 37 cars used. Most worked out well. We also bought 3 brand new.

Our condo we bought furnished, it was an estate sale.
 

Besides basic groceries, I don't shop for anything much. Goodwill may be a "bunch of crooks" as some suggest here but I vote for MCC. That strands for "Mennonite Central Committee." The place is run by volunteers and they do good helping when there are disasters. They are found in Canada and The USA.

When we sold our last house, I took carloads of stuff to the MCC Store. Years ago I used to buy and record songs off records. Don't do that anymore as I have more music then I have time to listen to.
 
Yes, I've been a thrifter for many years, my best friend and I used to take road trips all over the South , we'd come home with a car load of treasures, many that I still have.
 

Most of my cars - used. My homes - used. Some shelves I bought for the craft supplies - used. One or two tins I put stuff in - used. A sewing machine I regret buying and no longer have - used. A few wall mirrors - used.

There aren't many thrift/charity shops around here. Goodwill is the most expensive, and I mean that sincerely. You could buy some of the same things brand new at Target or elsewhere for less money.
 
We have owned 9 homes, 7 were used and 2 were new. What I learned is that a new house is just as much work as a used one. It is just that the nature of the work is different.
 
I found a mink stole at a store that I was dropping off clothes for them. I ended up buying the stole at a very reasonable price. Since it was my daughters b-day, I thought I would give it to her with the understanding I get to use it whenever I want. We took it to a furrier to be cleaned and it turned out beautiful.

I found beautiful antiques that no one wanted at the same store for a very cheap price. I also found a treadle sewing machine for a steal and took it be be cleaned and oiled. It works like a charm.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy something at this little church run store. They ladies there are terrific to deal with.

Yep, plenty of both. I always buy second hand if it's a good deal. No need for new, for most of what I get. And donate a lot too, sometimes not too long after buying...

Had no idea about Goodwill, always thought of them as the good guys.

Here in Utah the biggest second hand store is Deseret Industries https://www.deseretindustries.org/ run by the Mormons. Its a bit more "upscale" than Goodwill, mostly a little nicer things and mostly a little more expensive. I patronize them, they do good things in the community and not just for Mormon Church members.
 
I forgot to add that, Yes, I donate to thrift/charity shops. If it's usable and in good condition I do not throw away. Habitat for Humanity was also a recipient and a couple of charities that took cars.

A few times I put things at the end of the driveway with a Free sign and everything but two new macrame hanging plant holders were snapped up within an hour. I sold a car that way, too. Put a sign in the window, parked at the end of the driveway and someone came and bought it within hours.

I have a few Christmas glass goblets from thrift store. A couple of Pioneer Woman sandwich plates. Don't know if these were ever used, they looked in perfect condition. I could probably remember more, but don't want to bog the thread down with my small purchases.

Lots of things people gave and I didn't like, want, or need I finally gave myself permission to donate. Someone else may appreciate the stuff.

My best ever "purchase" was a used dog. He was my first dog and my heart. My second dog was also a rescue, but no money was exchanged, only all the love.
