Do You Ever Talk To Yourself?

Here it is a very hot Laid Back Saturday afternoon and I find myself having mental conversations with my self. I live alone and haven't spoken in person or by phone to any one in three days except for email and texting. Perhaps that's due to my hearing problem. I don't think I am going BATTEY.

I talk to myself when I'm trying to work through a problem of some sort, like bookkeeping or putting a piece of furniture together. Don't know why it helps, but it does . I don't think you're going BATTEY either! I do, however, talk to my dogs A LOT. The wonderful thing about them is that I can put actual sentences together, or blather total gibberish just for fun and they listen just as attentively either way! :biggrin-new: :dog:

BTW Lon, hope your cochlear implant procedure is a huge success!

I was told my grandfather used to say there's nothing wrong with talking to yourself- you should only start to worry if you answer. lol :playful:

I don't think it's uncommon for single people to fall into a sort of solitary confinement as they age.

I have limited contact with people and when I do it is usually clerks in stores, banks, etc... I don't talk to people every day.

I also notice that when I do talk to family they usually ask how I'm doing and before I can answer they move on to another topic, I tend to listen and make the appropriate sound effects as they talk.

In answer to the question, yes.

No imaginary friends yet, just conversations with myself, LOL!!!

All the time.I also talk to my 2 cats, they're not great conversationalist though.
No doubt,if I started my "filibuster" with handing out their treats,I might have a better audience :)

Yes, all the time. The last time, I was mad at myself for almost taking a shower with my hearing aids on. I caught it just barely in time.
I talk to the TV set more and more. My wife usually watches in another room. How can you help it with what's on the news lately?

It seems that I'm the only one at times that wants to hear what I have to say. If I didn't listen, nobody else would.

I also talk to the streams, ducks, trains while I'm riding on the green way on my bike. I guess I must be losing it.

I mumble to myself sometimes. I like my own company ~ LOL . My husband always talks to himself out loud ..then I ask "what?" and he says "nothing" . I finally learned to ignore it and when he does actually say something to me & I ignore it , he asks "why don't you listen to me ?" . *** Sigh ***

Your thread title is : Do You Ever Talk To Yourself? Do you mean out loud? Or. having mental conversations, as you said above.

Having mental conversations is entirely normal for humans. Most people are unable to shut off the "inner chatter" for more than a few seconds.

I do all the time and the hubby thinks I'm talking to him. When I do talk to him he doesn't answer because he thinks I'm talking to myself. It can get quite confusing. When I do talk to myself I get better answers.

Yes I talk to myself but I also talk to my dog who died 12 years ago and have chats/arguments with him and I use a funny voice for his side of the conversation.
"Oh that's ok" I hear you say as you edge towards the door trying not to make eye contact with me.
I think its because I'm very isolated and have very little human contact. I occasionally have WhatsApp conversations with my ex wife and my two grown up children. That's why I value my cyber friends like you all.
Then again I've always been a bit of a loner even when I was a child I had two imaginary friends who used to always run off and play together leaving me on my own. ;)

I've always talked to myself -- it helps, for some reason, especially when I'm trying to figure out something or put something together. I have conversations with my dog, too; she is usually quite interested in what I have to say, tho she's probably just listening to hear if I say treat or park or walk or go for a ride. I also sometimes hum under my breath, sort of unconsciously.

Yup, I talk to myself. I have to. It blocks out all those other voices!!:)

It is said that we are three people. The person you think you are, the one you really are, and the one you project. They relate to ego, id, and superego. These concepts, in turn, are reflected in our astrological: sun. moon, and rising signs. What you do is get the three persons together with Freud's characters and your natal chart. You then have the means to communicate internally...without one word.

As for literally talking to myself...sure. Like most of you, it helps me solve problems...usually of a mechanical or construction nature. And yes, my cat and I have long and pleasant raps.

I am the same way Aunt Bea, I don't talk with many people every day either. I don't text as I only have one hand that works and I need to hold the phone with it. I talk with myself about projects I am doing. Right now I am trying to de-clutter as I have too much stuff. So will send stuff to Goodwill etc, that the 2 daughters don't want. Lon, its a hot rainy day here in Houston, so I think I a going back to bed for awhile.

Yes, I talk to myself, especially when I do something dumb; I also talk to my cat and she answers me!
I watch Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune in the evening and I am always yelling the answers to the
contestants.

Talk to myself? Absolutely. Some days it's the only intelligent conversations I have. And it's the only way to reach a decision about a weighty subject. Listing the pros vs. cons - sometimes silently, sometimes not - helps me decide ..... do I make chicken or a chop for dinner? Broccoli or cauliflower?

I also live alone but for me, it's a blessing. I have strong hermit genes and am finally at a point in my life when I can indulge them.

I usually don't, but may blurt out a word, or two, expressing some happy, or annoyance over some thing that I did, (accidentally blurting, of course. ha) or when I've seen/heard something aggravating on T V. I keep from cursing by substituting an "ARRG!" or some other loud...not considered cursing...expression.

Having upstairs neighbors who might hear me if I talked aloud to myself perhaps might think I'm going off my rocker, if I did. ;) I live alone. and because I seldom use my voice, it sounds a little 'ragged' when I first answer my phone.
