Do You Go To Potluck Dinners?

I enjoy someone else's cooking if I personally know the cook and their kitchen habits. But let's face it, some cooks simply have habits or homes that make me a little queasy.

They say what you don't know won't hurt you, so what if the cook tastes as they go or the dog sniffed it before I did.

We got a message that they are once again starting them in our park, I like to fit in but not sure I will go.

Prior to the pandemic we used to go to a number of them each year. Barring anything unforeseen, we'll probably start attending them again soon.

We usually only go to those sponsored by organizations we either belong to or know well.

My thinking is that anyone who knows much about restaurant kitchens and still eats in restaurants shouldn't worry too much about pot luck dinners.

And at a pot luck, as in a restaurant, I wouldn't eat anything that didn't look, smell, or taste right. Over the years I've encountered problems with restaurant food (and banquet food), but never at a pot luck.

Read the other day that a lot of restaurants are not offering buffet any longer due to the worry of being sued because so many people touch the serving utensils. Restaurants.....we never get to see what goes on behind closed doors.

I'll pass.

I think pot-luck will be a memory ...
not so much about hygiene as so many people any more have dietary restrictions or preferences. Gluten free / salt restrictions/ dairy issues / Low carb .... vegan the lists go on and on

I always felt hurried at a potluck table to decide to try or not i use to take a tiny dab...... found items i liked ..... went back to get a portion and most of the good items would be gone.... It is also hard if you are new to group as some never touch your dish out of not knowing you........ always had spouse take a good portion of whatever we brought to start the ball rolling.....

That’s how I feel.

I’ve seen food labelled as having nuts, or similar. If someone truly has an issue that isn’t deadly they can just choose carefully.

A group I belonged to used to have 2-3 potlucks a year. It was truly a pot luck, no menu, just bring whatever you like. Great food.

We used to enjoy potlucks, I always took my fudge squares . People would ask me for the recipe and I always shared it. In the recipe I always gave the pan size. Then they would come back and tell me it didn't turn out like mine, and it was because they ignored the pan size and used the wrong size. I actually took my own pans and made them for a friend who wanted them for her cafe after she used the wrong size pan so of course it failed.

Unless it’s family I struggle with eating other peoples food. I think potlucks are possibly becoming a thing of the past. I for one am more conscience of germs since pandemic and being immune suppressed.
So, true! ⬆️--I'm even reluctant ordering take-out...who knows their conditions?!🤔

I attend a Baptist church. It is part of our theology.
We'd have a "pitch-in dinner" a couple times a year at church as a child. Or, it was also called "dinner on the grounds".

The ladies would bring whatever they were famous for, so you'd have the best fried chicken, the best casserole, the best chocolate cake, etc. Everyone would eat until they were stuffed and then to be polite, eat a little more. Compliments would be given and recipes requested (but not always granted).

Our next door neighbor would attend, bring an entire meal only for her family and they would eat only that. She'd say she didn't know what kind of kitchens other people's food was prepared in. As you can imagine, she didn't make very many friends..... I'm not sure why she bothered attending.

I think potlucks are essentially a thing of the past. As someone mentioned earlier, dietary habits are hard to accomodate....does that green bean dish contain a dab of bacon grease? Is there cheese hiding in that casserole? Could there be an egg in those brownies? OH MY GAWD.....IS THERE GLUTEN LURKING IN THERE???? Vegans and strict vegetarians would never be able to trust the food.
