Do you have a mobile phone?

I agree with them! I think mobile phones are one of the great achievements of marketing. They convinced us that we all had to have one so we could "stay connected," every second of every day to our friends and relatives who now worry about us if they haven't had at least ten calls by noon and are just dying to see a picture of our lunch.

I am not convinced of that at all.
I am not connected every second of every day, but people at home with land lines sure are! (Some days my phone is not even on)
No one I know cares about the number of calls they get by noon - landline OR cell.

My property didn't have a land line when I bought it in 2012. So for many years we used a internet based phone (Ooma) which worked well and only cost about $3 a month. Only my son had a cell phone until about 2019 when everyone but me got a smartphone.

I held out until 2020 when I moved to Albuquerque to work Doordash and Ubereats for a couple of years, needing a smartphone (work only) for the work apps and getting a second flip phone for personal use. After retiring recently I went down to one phone (degoogled Android) and my poor flip phone has been decommissioned.

I have a Tello plan with unlimited calls/texts and 2 GB of data for $10 a month, I never use the data since I use my phone for calls and texts only.

Our landline was cut by our internet provider last year, so I was forced to get my first cell phone. I find it far inferior to the landline. It's uncomfortable to use compared to the receiver that curved nicely around my face and didn't have to be mashed against my ear. The landline came with voice messages that were easy to listen to. Now I have to work to get my messages to appear so that I can read them. Just making a call out takes longer with more buttons to push and more chances to get the number wrong. People text me and I can't text back because the numbers are too hard to use. I never had to charge my landline and I never misplaced it.

Yes, I have a mobile phone. My landline was disconnected approximately 3 years ago due to constantly rising costs. My mobile is on all day, and I try to answer every call from anyone I know when it comes in. When I go to bed at night, I turn on the "do not disturb" feature, which allows only calls from selected ("starred") contacts to get through. That way, my family and 2 close friends can reach me 24/7, but all other calls will go to voicemail.

Even people in third world countries have mobile phones.

I have a love/hate relationship with it. Hate the spam and the tracking. Love the maps app. Yes, a paper map is good but it doesn't show where you are and if you are lost, well, that feature certainly is handy. And yesterday, when the car repair place called me to tell me the car was ready, I was able to call the courtesy driver, who also had a mobile phone, to pick me up and take me to my car without trying to find a pay phone. There are definite advantages to mobile phones.

that's good hadn't heard about the do not disturb feature - where do I find that? I live on the edge of a forest glade and have a mobile ph and usb internet connection as you now see me type - magic heh!!!

This is a social media site.
Maybe I used the wrong words. I do that sometimes. My Son thinks it is hilarious.
I meant Facebook,Twitter,LinkedIn, social networking services.

(The term social media was first used in 2004 and is often used to describe social networking services.)

🤗

Maybe It's me that's been wrong all along, then. I thought social media was anyplace online where people talk to each other, so I thought message boards and forums were the original "social media," but if it means a social networking service -- well I don't even know what that is.

Sigh. I'm so tired of having to learn all this stuff for no particular reason. Last week we couldn't access any of our money in our bank. Turned out we were locked out because we didn't have windows number whatever. Being forced to load a new Windows program every year or so, to no advantage I can see, is just another thing I don't get.

Oh yes I love Google maps. I used to walk kilometers the wrong way, but now my phone says where I am. Fabulous.

Different Types of Social Media Platforms
  • Social Networks: Focus on connecting with others (Facebook, LinkedIn).
  • Media-Sharing Networks: Focus on visual content (Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube).
  • Discussion Forums: Focused on conversations (Reddit, Quora).
  • Microblogging/Messaging: Focused on short updates/fast communication (X/Twitter, Threads, WhatsApp).
  • Content Curation/Review: Platforms like Pinterest and Yelp.

So, yes, this forum is social media.

Well..I really do not know how to descibe what I meant.
I perceive a Forum differently than those other platforms.
I will run that by my Son the next time I talk to him.
He is good at that sort of thing. He can tell me how to explain it better.
He is probably going to laugh at me.

Google AI says that a forum is also a form of social media. I also thought only Facebook and such with your real name and pic were social media, because a forum is anonymous.

hadn't heard about the do not disturb feature - where do I find that?
It depends on the phone you have. I have an Android and "do not disturb" is located in the upper drop down just below "internet" (where you turn on cellular or wifi) when you swipe down. If you long press "do not disturb" it opens settings where you can personalize. If you don't find it there, go to "settings" and search for "do not disturb."

If you have an Iphone, it is part of "focus" settings.

If that isn't helpful, do an internet search for "how to use do not disturb," and there are a number of youtube videos, each only about a minute long.

Google AI's opinion on a forum qualifying as social media is based on all the available knowledge on the internet as well as some selective programming. It doesn't feel emotion, have a family, have any real human relationships or true friendships, no childhood experiences, I could go on forever.

To me AI is just a tool that is great at collecting information, recognizing patterns, calculations, data processing, ect.

I wouldn't give two cents for AI to give me an opinion on anything else, it has no soul.

I have a Mobile phone of course... I have an Iphone... and I've had mobile phones since way back in the late 80's...early 90's...

I still have quite a few of my past mobile phones from the last 15 or 20 years...

my-mobile-phones.jpg

I still have my landline.. and I prefer the lanline for calls tbh...much more comfortable to use...

However I do love the convenience of the mobile when I'm out and about especially for the camera...

All that said... I am always stunned at people who have their phone in their hand at all times..regardless..rendering them literally one handed... and they panic if they leave their phone at home

I mean in the past , before we got in the car to go to the store..... did we load, all of our Encylopedias... our atlases... Our camera.. Our compasses... our Flashlights... Our phone books...our bank cards galore.. our stereo system, and our DVD's ... ..all before we went anywhere..?...NO..of course we didn't , we didn't need 99% of that stuff... so why now do some people panic like crazy if they lose sight of their phone for a Nano second !:ROFLMAO:

Yes, it’s been about 30 years. The first phones were primitive. Hated scrolling through the numbers to find a letter in the alphabet for a text.

If I get a call while I’m out, I either decline it or just let it ring for the 5 times. No big deal.
