For years I've tried to make sure to prepare for "what if this happened, what if that happened (or didn't happen). Here are mine: What if...
~I had to move from this apartment (rents or taking on another mortgage would be way more expensive than what I'm paying now). Having to move would be because something catastrophic happens in our building or complex. I thought of this for years because of so many reports of buildings partially collapsing (before the incident in Florida) or catching fire, even exploding (we had a gas leak in mine and the adjoining building a couple of years ago).
~I got a serious illness and had to depend on my son or other relatives to handle my business (I relish my independence) or
~I had to go into a nursing home (can't get LTC, so would I be able to pay the cost?)
~What if my pension gets cut in half or discontinued. This is because when I retired 24 years ago, the state was billions short of what should have been in our fund. Now it's even worse and I've read about other pensions going broke.
What are your What Ifs?
