The last time I went into the city to watch a film with a friend the cost was $14, we had a meal at $10 each. Getting back to my car, the fee was $22 for three hours

yes that's roughly the price in London to park ...

We don't have to pay for parking in supermarket car parks .. just a refundable $1.00 (Loony coin) for the use of a shopping cart/trolley.
yes we have some supermarkets who don't charge except for the pound coin in the trolley... but other supermarkets charge per hour... and you're not allowed to park for more than 3 hours in any of them ... some like Aldi only allow 90 minutes..

There is only one Shopping centre here in Perth that has paid parking - so far.
Westfield Carousel in Cannington.
First 2 hours are free then $5 for the next hour, up to $35 for 6 1/2 or more.
Here shopping online is very popular, for all the reasons everyone else likes it in other countries, but also because of our high parking costs in shopping malls or retail car parks...

@hollydolly Are these shopping malls & supermarkets that are charging for parking located in areas with very limited room. Do they have to charge because everyone would be using them otherwise.

We have some grocery stores that limit the parking to customers only. If someone parks and then walks away, they’ll be called out, sometimes.

I was asking if they were in large urban areas where there’s no other parking around. Into DT metropolitan areas, parking is generally in large, multi-level car parks that charge a fortune. Even grocery stores in these urban areas may have parking fees to keep non-shoppers from just taking up space for a few hours.

Urban hotels charge for parking, even if you’re a guest.

Las Vegas used to known for it’s free parking, even free valet parking. That’s a thing of the past.

Oh no, we have car parks next door to car parks in most towns and cities, it's just a very cheap way for the Parking companies Via the local council to fleece the public...

Parking is expensive downtown. When my wife and I would go downtown, we'd usually park at the park-and-ride and ride the light-rail train downtown, so parking is free and it's just a few bucks to ride the train. Plus, if you've had a few drinks, you don't have to drive downtown where you're a lot more likely to get into some kind of accident and get into big trouble. The park-and-ride is only about maybe two miles from our house. Even then, I'm reluctant to drink. The last thing I want to do is wind up in jail for a DUI. I'm too old for that kind of thing.

Just checked the Hotel I used to work for in Downtown Nashville and the rate for a night of Valet parking is $55.00.
No self-parking allowed.

First 4 years I worked for them, they paid for a parking pass at a covered garage one block from the Hotel.
Then the new owners of the Hotel stopped that and we parked at the Titan Stadium and caught a free shuttle
to the Hotel.
When that stopped, I decided it would cost more to park than I was willing to pay.
Never quite understood their thinking.
When a piece of equipment went down, ( Heating/Air Conditioning for the building ) I was on call.
Finding a place to park on a Friday or Saturday Night in Nashville is beyond hard.
I explained the problem, but they would never come up with a solution.

Wished them Good Luck and retired.:)

At
GGMC Parking, LLC.
1651 Third Avenue
NYC It's $35/hr (That's with tax) But in Long Pond, PA, it's free.
BTW, in NYC, Manhattan, renting a parking space for a month is about the same price as renting an apartment.

Very expensive in Brighton Sussex UK.....
But hubby has A Blue Badge .....thank goodness...

Not too bad here, as long as you avoid Glasgow and Edinburgh. In places like my nearest city, Aberdeen, the charge is usually £1 per hour, but the supermarkets generally allow up to 2 hours free. Smaller towns all have some or all free parking. Hospitals have free parking for patients and visitors.

unlike England the only place in the k which has to pay astronomical parking fees in hospital car parks

I never go anywhere that requires me to pay for parking. The closest big cities to me are Seattle and Portland, OR. You couldn't force me to get near either one of them. YUK!

Well, you do have less land area so I suppose the ones who do own the land want to make it pay. Villages and small towns around here all used to have parking meters but they were pulled back in the 60's.

yep that's the reason , because land is at a premium but why the charges are so high is anyone's guess tbh...sheer greed...
