Do You Have The Food Blues?

A serious question here, what with all the food warnings we get nowadays.
Do you have The Food Blues?

"Food Blues"

I was waitin' in Rosie's Restaurant
When the waiter came up and said what do you want
I looked at the menu and it looked so nice
Till he said lemme give you some advice.

He said spaghetti and potatoes got too much starch
Pork chops and sausage are bad for your heart
There's hormones in chicken and beef and veal
Bowl of ravioli is a dead man's meal.

Bread got preservatives there's nitrites in ham
Artificial coloring in jellies and jam
Stay away from donuts run away from pie
Pepperoni pizza is a sure way to die.

Sugar rots your teeth and makes you put on weight
But artificial sweetener's got cyclamates
Eggs got cholesterol, there's fat in cheese
Coffee ruins your kidneys and so does tea.

Fish got mercury, red meat is poison
Salt's gonna send your blood pressure risin'
Hot dogs and bologna got deadly red dyes
Vegetables and fruits are sprayed with pesticides.

So I said what can I eat that's gonna make me last
He said a small drink of water in a sterilized glass
And then he stopped and he thought for a minute
And said never mind the water, there's carcinogenics in it.

So I got up from the table and walked out in the street
Realizin' there was nothin' I could eat
I ain't eaten for a month and I'm feeling fine
'Cause he did not mention beer, whiskey, women and sweet red wine...

I don't think about it anymore. I have food restrictions that I absolutely must follow or I will become quite ill, so anything else that I can eat, good or bad is up for grabs. Love crispy chicken skin, bacon, this time of year, jelly beans till I pop! I think what has turned me off more than anything is the fact that they keep changing their minds. One day you can eat this or that, the next day you can't.

yes!!

Everything in moderation:)

I agree! I absolutely will not eat stuff that's no fat, no this, no that, artificial fats, sugar substitutes, etc. The body knows what to do with real fats and real sugar but doesn't know what to do with artificial sweeteners and fake fats. Just eat a little bit of whatever you want and give your body what your body tells you it wants. Unless you have a serious condition, a little sugar, a little salt and a little fat will do you no harm.

It doesn't matter all that much, IMO, I eat what I want, in moderation, but I already prefer healthy foods, so there is no real struggle, unless I want more ice cream, in which case I just have some, no sweat.

I don't think they're 'changing their minds' so much as research into food, agriculture and nutrition is an ongoing process and as our technology becomes more and more refined, what was considered acceptable understanding turns out to be inaccurate or is expanded upon. Be glad that it's being clarified and new understandings develop. Like medicine, we should be glad they didn't stop learning when we were kids.

This is true Debby, but sometimes it gets to be a bit much. Examples of this would be shrimp and eggs. They have flip flopped so much about these foods. Sometimes several times in one year! To much cholesterol, no cholesterol. I am 70, not over weight and not on any medications. Do have to watch the gluten . You do have a point though, had they not found out about gluten intolerance, I would have been dead 20 years ago. On the other hand, they want to introduce a gene from wheat into many non gluten plants. But that's another story.

being British this was a staple in my house o_O to which I would never eat now.. Spam gives me the blues. But now a days I eat healthy organic food and meat in moderation. I would much rather have fish. Occasionally though I do get a craving for fish and Chips Yum in all their greasy glory.
