Do you have way too much stuff?

I have over 100 souvenir coffee mugs from places I visited. Still have a bunch of VCR tapes, and cassette tapes- (no player). I have tools that I haven't used in 30 years. Every winter, I promise myself, that I'm going to start in the bedroom and clear out stuff. And move to another room, month by month till April, when I get the shed. Well, it's another winter...............I guess I like my stuff too much?

Oh yeah

Got rid of 'collections'
But still
Too too many 'things'
Even tools and brackets
Thing is, I know one day I'll need it
I paw thru bins of (say) brackets, looking for a certain bracket
then
I'll run across a bracket that sparks a possible other need
of which sends me on a new adventure, looking for the type of screw
of which I have all these tidy tiny drawers in cabinets
then
I forget what I was originally was doing
then
the dinner bell rings
then
a nap

But yeah

I need a bigger shop

Yes! I even wanted to get a storage unit and put it in there, but then the rent went up so high that that option went out the window!

Waaaaay too much stuff. I tell myself everyday that I will start in one room and move to the next when it’s tidy. But, all I do is stand there looking at the stuff, wondering what to do with it, then turn around, close the door, and on and on it goes.
Yep, know what you mean. However, I make an appointment and on that day, that is all I do. Just start small and then just keep going. I love coffee breaks, then back to work.

No, I think the term "way too much" greatly understates my stuff collection...

I believe it's genetic, my brother bought a house in a fly-in community so he could fill the hanger with his stuff (he has no airplane). It's been full for years and he keeps acquiring storage space. I am not much better, but have no hanger...

I move often, so I don't have a lot of stuff. For many years, my policy has been that if I can't move it myself or it won't fit in my car, I don't want it.

Before I moved, I was living in just a room, and I did have a storage locker. A housemate who was living out of a knapsack laughed at me and said it was probably all junk. He was right.

My in-unit storage closet is a bit disorganized. Recently I saw a neighbor's closet with its nice shelves, and thought I needed to buy some shelves too. Then I decided that was ridiculous. $200! Better to keep my possessions to a minimum.

I could probably get rid of a few dishes or shirts and not miss them. I have a suitcase full of travel clothes that might never get worn. Other than that, I think I'm good. I'm constantly giving stuff away when I realize I'm never going to use it again.

I've known people with hangars full of junk that's just a home for mold and vermin. Or rooms so full of junk you can't move around or find anything.

When I moved I downsized by getting rid of things I hadn't used in years. At the same time I emptied my parent's house of what they too had accumulated. Some things were really good but I had no need for them, so the guy I had to get rid of it all probably took some for himself and sold some. I could have had a yard sale or sold some things online, but that would take too much time. My philosophy was that everything could be replaced again if I needed what I threw out.

I have a house full of stuff, but I don't have junk... and I don't collect twee things like ornaments and all those type of dust collectors. Everything in my house that is more than I probably should have is paperwork, TV and film scripts from various shows worked on..laminates, and lots of tv and studio show paraphernalia , but they're all boxed and filed. so they're no making a mess or making the place look cluttered.

The most things on show are my clothes which are in my office room/ walk in closet space..

if I had to do a fast clear out of unnecessary stuff.. like my sideboard, kitchen, and dressing table drawers I could do it in an hour if I was pushed to...

ETA..I forgot.. my loft is packed out with stuff which I can't get down by myself to donate or throw.... most of which belong to the estranged O/H

Yes. I have a storage room attached to the house that stores lots of OLD items that need to be tossed, or given to the Armenian Museum. Pictures, relevant articles..I told the guy at the museum I'd be there last year, and I still haven't gone.

Pots, pans, stuff in the bottom cupboards in the kitchen.
So many things I just don't know where to put, or what to do with. Some stuff is hard to throw away.

You could say that I'm a sentimental type of person.

I'm trying to slowly clean out.
I was in a thrift store and there was an entire shelf of someone's salt and pepper collection. Many many different ones collected and received (I bet) through the years.
I hope it brought them joy.
The only thing I've ever collected was pencils.
It starter when my kids were in school and they had field trips. I'd tell them to bring me a pencil.
They still bring me a pencil when they travel.
They don't take up much room and could be useful if needed.
My mother did the same with matchbooks. I have hers.

We have a bigger problem. Furst, we downsized from two 1800 sq ft homes to one 1400 sq foot home. Most of the stuff was my wife's as it was far better than anything I had.
Now, we are in an 1100 sq foot apartment that we have fully furnished. The problem is what to do with the living room, dining room, and den furniture in our old place.
PLUS 3 storage tubs of stuff my wife moved in with that she has not looked at once.

There's a new method for decluttering....you hold the item in your hands and ask yourself, "Does this bring me joy?" If the answer is no, out it goes.

So far, I've gotten rid of the scales, my old girdle, the broccoli, my diet and the vacuum sweeper. Tomorrow, I'm tossing the dishrag, the dustmop, and the bottle of window spray. I think the stove is going, too.
